Coordination compound in which a metal is coordinated from a ligand formally derived from disubstituted 1,2-ethylenedithiol [R-C(S)=C(S)-R']. The term, initially proposed by McCleverty, does not refer to the global molecular charge of the complex. In fact, dithiolenes are stable in different formal molecular oxidation states, each assuming different chemico-physical properties. In the literature, mono-, bis-, and tris-dithiolenes are reported, depending on the natural of the central metal.
