Reutigen is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

Reutigen is first mentioned around 1300 as Rötingen.[3]

Geography

Reutigen has an area of Template:Km2 to mi2. Of this area, 46.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 45% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 4.8% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (3.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[4]

The municipality is located in the Niedersimmental and includes the village of Reutigen, Hani and Allmi. The municipality runs from the north-east side of the Stockhorn chain down to the Kander river.

Demographics

Reutigen has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 1,023.[5] As of 2007, 2.4% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -1.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (97.6%), with Albanian being second most common ( 0.6%) and French being third ( 0.3%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 48.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (15.8%), the Green Party (9.3%) and the local small left-wing parties (8.8%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 27.4% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 58.7% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.9%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Reutigen about 79.3% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).

Reutigen has an unemployment rate of 1.56%. As of 2005, there were 67 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 21 businesses involved in this sector. 47 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 8 businesses in this sector. 114 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 28 businesses in this sector.[4] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
