The Sjoa river provides the outlet from lake Gjende at Gjendesheim in the Jotunheimen mountains of Norway's Jotunheim National Park. It flows eastward into the Gudbrandsdalslågen river via the Heidal traditional district in the Gudbrandsdal.

In addition to being a popular tourist destination due to the rich beauty and tradition of the Heidal, the river is popular for kayaking and rafting. Parts of the river is however very demanding and a number of rafters have died, the most recent accident claimed 4 ukranian rafters.[1]

South of the village Randsverk it flows through a canyon called "Ridderspranget" (Jump of a Knight), due to a norwegian myth.
