The Peel Centre is a shopping park located in Stockport, Greater Manchester. It currently contains nineteen units, with fourteen currently occupied.[4] It is owned and operated by the Peel Land and Property Division of The Peel Group. It currently extends to 230,000 sq ft, with units varying in size.[3] It is located within close proximity to the town centre shopping areas, including the Merseyway Shopping Centre,[5] with which it competes for similar tenants.

The site on which the park stands has had a variety of different usages over time, it previously had industry and housing.[6] It then contained a power station and gas works, and then had a variety of industrial usages,[7] it was only developed in its current form from the late 1980s onwards. It was constructed in phases with the latter phases being those at the eastern side, where both Currys and PC World are located.[8][9]

Retailers

The park hosts a huge variety of different retailers, there was formerly a Homebase store at the western end of the centre, but this was replaced by Argos, Boots[10] and Borders. In December 2009, the Borders store along with the rest of the chain closed after the UK chain (formerly part of the US Borders Group), went into administration and a buyer failed to materialise.[11] It currently contains a branch of Frankie and Benny's, the only restaurant on the site.[12] The centre also includes the stores to the rear of the centre, including Dunelm Mill, SCS[13] and Matalan.[14][15]

The M60 motorway is adjacent to the centre, and junction 27 (Portwood Roundabout) is located at the eastern corner of the centre, this makes it accessible to a large catchment population in the Greater Manchester Urban Area,[15] and as it competes actively with nearby shopping parks (e.g. Snipe Retail Park, Ashton-under-Lyne), succeeding in attracting large numbers of shoppers every year.

Extra Information

There is extensive car parking at the centre, it is mainly pay and display,[15][1] and is managed by Excel Parking Ltd. The centre is close to the towns major supermarkets, Asda, Sainsburys and Tesco Extra.

Immediately adjacent to The Peel Centre, across the road is a smaller development, Portwood Court, complementing the centre. It contains Pizza Hut, Maplin Electronics and The Carphone Warehouse.[16][17] Another retail park, Manchester Road Retail Park is located at the top of the A626 Tiviot Way from the Portwood Roundabout, this is significantly smaller than The Peel Centre and due to its distance from the Town Centre is less desirable than the Peel Centre, it currently contains Carpet Right, CSL and DIY store Wickes.[18]

In 2003, IKEA announced plans to open a store on the other side of the Portwood Roundabout and M60, but were denied planning permission, and after numerous appeals they were finally turned down in 2005 by the then Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.[19] The first IKEA store in Greater Manchester opened in 2006, in neighbouring Ashton-under-Lyne.[20]
