Guru Hargobind Thermal Plant at Lehra Mohabbat ( ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਗੋਬਿਂਦ ਥਰਮਲ ਪਲਾਂਟ, ਲ਼ਹਿਰਾ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ) is the smallest Thermal Power Generation station in Punjab[1] located on State Highway No. 12 which runs from Bathinda to Barnala. It is one of the three such plants in Punjab, the other two being Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant, and Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Power Plant at Ropar. It compromises of just two units that collectively generate up to 420 MW. Generators used are cylindrical rotor type, that were manufactured in India itself by BHEL[2]. At present, the plant is running with 98 per cent plant load factor (PLF), which is considered good. The unit was begun (phase I) with a generation capacity of 420 MW 1998.[3] when it was seen that the one at Bathinda was not enough to meet the demands of agricultural requirements of the area[4]
Use of obsolete artifacts at the establishment, especially transmission system often causes dire problems.[5] There is demand to improve the systems[6].
For a while a unique way to get rid solid pollutant was found literally at an industrial scale-by making it obligatory for nearby Brick Kiln manufacturing kilns to use the leftover of the Thermal but it did not work for long as they soon found legal loopholes and stop using it. Now cattle in the area have been reported sick and even dead due to the adverse effect on the graze. Even laundry hung outdoors by housewives get blackened[7]
