Elissa and Alvar Aalto in the 1950s

Elissa Aalto (November 22, 1922 – April 12, 1994), born Elsa Kaisa Mäkiniemi, was a Finnish architect and author. She was the widow of famed architect Alvar Aalto, who died in 1976. Along with her husband and Harald Deilmann, she helped design the opera house in Essen, Germany. She died in 1994, and was buried in Hietaniemi Cemetery, in Helsinki, Finland, with her husband.
