Toxemia may refer to:

  • A generic term for the presence of toxins in the blood. It is not necessarily the same as Bacteremia. The toxins released by bacteria can enter the blood stream and can move throughout the body without any bacteria entering the blood stream.
  • An outdated medical term for Pre-eclampsia, a serious condition in pregnancy that involves hypertension and proteinuria. It is now generally accepted that Pre-eclampsia is caused by endothelial dysfunction rather than 'toxins in the blood'[1]
  • This popular medical term has infiltrated the english syntax by becoming an accepted use when referring to toxins that exist in the blood. Usage and spelling of this word are general knowledge.
