Podzemelj is a village on the left bank of the Kolpa River in the Municipality of Metlika in the White Carniola area of southeastern Slovenia, next to the border with Croatia. The area is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola and is now included in the Southeast Slovenia statistical region.[2]

The local parish church is dedicated to Saint Martin and belongs to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Novo Mesto. It is first mentioned in written documents dating to 1279 and was extensively rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century.[3]
