Brüttelen is a municipality in the Seeland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

History

The earliest mention of Brüttelen is in 1142 when it was called Britinie. It also appears in 1148 as Britelgio and in 1183 as Britillo. In French it was known as Bretiège.[3]

Geography

Brüttelen has an area, as of 2009, of 6.62 km2 (2.56 sq mi). Of this area, 4.62 km2 (1.78 sq mi) or 69.8% is used for agricultural purposes, while 1.48 km2 (0.57 sq mi) or 22.4% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.47 km2 (0.18 sq mi) or 7.1% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.04 km2 (9.9 acres) or 0.6% is either rivers or lakes.[4]

Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 3.9% and transportation infrastructure made up 2.9%. 21.9% of the total land area is heavily forested. Of the agricultural land, 58.9% is used for growing crops and 9.8% is pastures, while 1.1% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is in rivers and streams.[4]

Brüttelen is located on the northern shore of the Moossee and at the foot of the Schaltenrain (592 m (1,942 ft)).[5] It includes the village of Brüttelen, several scattered individual farm houses and since 1917 the former village of Gäserz.

Demographics

Brüttelen has a population (as of 31 December 2020) of 582.[6] As of 2007, 10.8% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -3.6%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (91.6%), with French being second most common (4.0%) and Portuguese being third (1.7%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 56.3% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (16.1%), the FDP (7.8%) and the Green Party (7%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 22.4% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63.8% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.8%. The entire Swiss population is generally well educated. In Brüttelen about 62.3% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either University or a Fachhochschule).

Brüttelen has an unemployment rate of 1.03%. As of 2005, there were 109 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 26 businesses involved in this sector. 16 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 8 businesses in this sector. 123 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 10 businesses in this sector.[7] The historical population is given in the following table:[3]
