1UP.com is a video-game site owned and operated by Ziff Davis Media, the media conglomerate behind popular videogame magazines Computer Gaming World (CGW), Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM), and Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine (OPM). It is part of the 1UP Network, which includes 1UP.com, GameTab.com, and FileFront.com.
1UP.com expands on articles in Computer Gaming World, Electronic Gaming Monthly, and Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine, regularly featuring extended articles and video interviews that couldn't fit into the print editions of the magazines. Unlike older gaming sites like GameSpot, IGN and GameSpy, 1UP.com was built from the beginning to be a community-focused social networking site for gamers. Gamers, editors and game developers can all have profiles, blogs, and friends lists on the site, which are fairly well integrated into the editorial content (previews/reviews).
The 1UP Show
Since October 21, 2005 the website has been host to a weekly video podcast that covers all things gaming. The 1UP Show began as a low-budget side project of some of site's writers, though its second season saw the introduction of professionally made video graphics and high quality footage.
The show is shot largely in the offices of 1UP and its affiliated magazines, and partly on location at press events and game shows. It is known for its informal interviews, at least when compared to the more common talking head style interviews seen at GameSpot or IGN. The 1UP Show occasionally features obscure references to gaming culture.
The latest episodes of The 1UP Show (currently in its second season) can be downloaded/viewed from their site every Friday, or from Podcast managers such as iTunes or Yahoo! .
The "Cast" of The 1UP Show includes:
- Jane Pinckard, News Editor
- Garnett Lee, Former PC Editor (Season 1); now Managing Editor (Replacing Che in Season 2)
- Ryan O'Donnell, Video Producer
- Andrew Pfister, Reviews Editor
- And many more...
