Bob Schmetterer (New York City, 23 November 1943) is an American executive,[1] author and consultant. He is past chairman and CEO of Euro RSCG Worldwide and past president and COO of communications group Havas.[2]
Background
Born in the Bronx borough of New York City, Bob Schmetterer spent his earliest years in New York, with some summers in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Schmetterer's family settled in Hillsdale, New Jersey, in 1950 and he graduated from Pascack Valley High School in 1961.[3] Shortly afterward, he married Tara Deppert with whom he had two sons. Schmetterer completed his education over the course of nine years, working during the day and taking classes at night. He earned his BS in psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1967, and completed an MBA in 1970.
Advertising career
While in college, Schmetterer was a systems analyst, promoted to marketing manager at the New Jersey offices of British Motors. In 1968 he was hired by Volvo of America as marketing research director.[4] Schmetterer joined creative advertising agency Scali McCabe Sloves in 1971, where his first client assignment was Perdue Farms. Schmetterer was eventually appointed Managing Director and Chief Operating Officer of New York-based Scali McCabe Sloves firm. Over the next thirty years, for a handful of elite agencies, Schmetterer went on to manage signature clients like Volvo cars,[5] and others, including Pioneer Electronics, Maxell Tape, Dannon Yogurt and Intel.[6]
Recruited by marketing and communications company Young & Rubicam of New York, in 1984, Schmetterer became President and Chief Executive Officer of an international joint venture with Eurocom S.A. of France: HCM Advertising Worldwide (Havas Conseil Marsteller).[7] After winning the Peugeot car account in the United States, Peugeot became HCM's first global account.[8]
In 1987, looking for entrepreneurial opportunities, Schmetterer became a founding partner and president of the agency to become known as Messner, Vetere, Berger, McNamee, Schmetterer. In 1992, MVBMS was named the "hottest agency in the U.S." and Ad Agency of the Year by Adweek. The firm won major clients including, Volvo of America, MCI, NASDAQ, New Balance and Dunkin' Donuts. It was also among the first to see and embrace digital advertising and marketing, create websites and to place the now-ubiquitous "banner ads." MVBMS became the fastest growing agency in the United States in the early 1990's.[9] Promoting MCI with telvision commercials using child actress Anna Paquin of The Piano to advertise the promise of the Information Superhighway enabled MCI to buy the first ever ads online at news site Hotwired.[10]
In 1992, after being acquired by publicly owned French group Euro RSCG, Messner, Vetere, Berger, McNamee, Schmetterer became their New York office and Schmetterer was asked to join their Board of Directors. Five years later, he was appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Euro RSCG Worldwide.[11] Schmetterer remained at the helm for seven years, as the agency grew to 233 offices in 75 countries and billing grew to $13 billion. Under Schmetterer's leadership Euro RSCG became the largest digital agency worldwide.[12] In 2002, Schmetterer was named President and Chief Operating Officer of French advertising and communications holding company Havas.[13] Early in 2004, Schmetterer announced his retirement after thirty-three years in the ad industry.[14]
Author and speaker
In 2003, Schmetterer wrote Leap! A Revolution in Creative Business Strategy,[15] a business book about creative thinking, eventually published in six languages: English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and Chinese. Recognized as a leader and visionary in his field,[16] Schmetterer has been keynote speaker at industry conferences including those for Ad:Tech, the American Association of Advertising Agencies and the Cannes International Advertising Festival; in 2010 he participated in The Future of Television Conference at New York University Stern School of Business[17] and Schmetterer lectures throughout the world on creativity and motivation.
Personal
Schmetterer has been married for twenty-five years to Stacy Chiarello Schmetterer, with whom he runs a grant giving organization.[18]
