Tollcross Primary School
Tollcross Primary School (Gaelic: Bunsgoil Crois na Cìse) is a mixed non-denominational primary school on Fountainbridge near Tollcross in Edinburgh, which offers the only Gaelic medium primary education in Edinburgh and the Lothians.
Details
The school provides both Gaelic medium primary education and education entirely in English (to separate groups of children). The school is 100 years old and will be celebrating the centeenery soon.
In 2005 the school had 238 pupils in 11 classes, including 118 children in the Gaelic medium nursery and primary classes. Class sizes are typically 15-25 children, with several classes being composite, e.g. children from primary 6 and 7 are together in one class; the pupil to teacher ratio is 20:1. Children can continue their education in Gaelic at James Gillespie's High School in Edinburgh.
The present school dates to 1912, previous to which the school was known as the Lothian Road Public School, sited where the Usher Hall is today. The school buildings comprise eleven classrooms, a dining room, a hall, two libraries which double up as a computer room and music room, and a multi-sensory room. The school has three playgrounds with climbing frames. A Gaelic-language nursery and a community centre, Tollcross Community Education Centre, are on the same site. Kenneth Neal was the Head Teacher for over 20 years. He retired after the 2009/2010 school year. Alice Brown then became Acting Head Teacher.
