The Day of Truth is an annual, day-long event organised by the Alliance Defense Fund in opposition to the annual Day of Silence. It is currently in its second year.

Motivation

The Day of Truth is organised by the Alliance Defense Fund one day after the Day of Silence, organsed by GLSEN. According to their website, they aim to ensure that the student's First Amendment rights to hold and preach any religious beliefs they choose are not infringed.

On this day, students are encouraged to wear T-shirts and pass out cards that say:

"I am speaking the Truth to break the silence. Silence isn’t freedom. It’s a constraint. Truth tolerates open discussion, because the Truth emerges when healthy discourse is allowed. By proclaiming the Truth in love, hurts will be halted, hearts will be healed, and lives will be saved."

The above Day of Truth Statement was crafted as a counterpoint to the statement distributed during the Day of Silence. It is interesting to note, however, that the sentiment expressed by both statements is essentially the same. One group underscores the value of discourse by removing it, thus compelling us to appreciate it more. The opposing group underscores the value of discourse by engaging in it and stating their commitment to defend it. In this sense, both the Day of Silence and the Day of Truth seemingly offer the same message.

History

The Day of Truth was first organised in 2005. Over 1,100 students in 350 schools participated in it [1].

The second Day of Truth will be held on April 27th, 2006.
