De La Salle - Health Sciences Campus

The De La Salle Health Sciences Campus was established in 1987 by the Brothers of Christian Schools, or in Latin, Fraternum Christianarum Scholarum.The University draws inspiration from the life and the works of the institution's founding father, St. John Baptist De La Salle (Saint Jean Baptiste de la Salle, in French).

The DLS-Health Sciences Campus occupies an eight-hectare lot in Dasmariñas, Cavite. It is approximately 32km south of Manila and a kilometer away from Dasmariñas town proper. The Campus is easily accessible by public transportation through 3 main routes: The Coastal Road-Aguinaldo Highway route form North, the Carmona Highway from the East and the Governor's Drive from the West.

The Campus' location in the emerging city that is Dasmariñas is greatly conductive to learning, being both accessible to the conveniences of a city and at the same time surrounded by the lush and serene environment of the countryside. Within a kilometer radius are situated the DLSU-Dasmariñas, other colleges, shopping center, restaurants and entertainment centers and the student villages and homes.

  • Cross: This symbolizes the Christian faith and a living relationship with God.
  • Star: The five-pointed radiant star is the worldwide symbol of the De La Salle Brothers. It reminds us of the star of

Bethlehem that led the wise men of the east to Jesus Christ as the institution will lead and guide the people to the highest quality of life.

  • Human Head: This symbolizes the humanitarian approach in serving the community and the maxim of the institution “Nurturing

people through healing, teaching and research”. It also represents the HSC people who serve as dynamic catalysts for ethical, spiritual, social and economic transformation of the individual, community and country.

  • Snake& Rod: The snake coiled around the rod symbolizes medicine and health care for all. From the book of Exodus, it was stated

that anyone who will look up to the snake on the rod “shall be healed.” The institution will promote health through careful stewardship of resources, effective leadership, links with other institutions, and innovative community-oriented programs.

  • Hands: The hands bind the institution together, to work zealously as one in an environment of mutual respect, fairness and

love.

  • Laurel & root: To achieve honor and glory, the institution aims to form Lasallian Achievers and Healers for God and country with the

will to propagate values and knowledge among all social classes with particular focus on the poor (in consonance with the legacy of St. John Baptist de La Salle).

  • Book & Heart: The book signifies knowledge, understanding and excellence in health care services, health professions

education and health–related researches. The heart symbolizes the pervading Lasallian character that is committed, compassionate, confident and competent.

The hands, root, leaves and shape of hands form the shape of a HOME that signifies a Lasallian living the Filipino Culture.

The sphere represents the never-ending quest for relevant learning, competent teaching, and scientific inquiry producing socially responsible and nationalistic health professionals.

== The Campus ==

The Campus itself is composed of a cluster of four-storey buildings and a ten-storey hospital wing. The four-storey Academic Building (Building 5) houses the classrooms and laboratories of the four Colleges as well as the administrative offices of the College of Physical Therapy. The four-storey DLS-Angelo King Medical Research Center (Building 6) houses the Research Unit, the University Library, and the offices of the Basic Science Departments of the College of Medicine. The University Medical Center(UMC) is composed of 2 four-storey buildings (Building 1 and 2) and the ten-storey hospital, annex, the Dra. Teoderica Favis vda. De Rivera Hall (Building 3). Aside from the hospital rooms, doctor's clinics, and the Outpatient Department, the UMC is also home to the administrative offices of the College of Nursing and Midwifery and the college of Medical Radiation Technology and the Clinical Science Departments of the College of Medicine. The Emergency Rooms and Operating Rooms are located in the Hospital annex. The one-storey Jose Sotto Tantiansu Center Institute (Building 4) is the center for diagnosis and treatment.

== College of Medicine==

  • The De La Salle University College of Medicine seeks to provide quality medical education that promotes academic excellence, scholastic diligence, scientific attitudes, and relevant experience. It offers an integrated curriculum that is problem- and community-oriented. The College also provides opportunities for continuing medical education not only for its constituents but also for practitioners in the region.
  • The curriculum promotes the use of clinical teaching materials based on its milieu, a holistic approach to the treatment of patients, and the respect for the patient's rights and dignity. The graduates are encouraged to exemplify in their lives a Christian consciousness, the highest standard of moral values, and ethics in their training and practice of medicine. The graduates are expected to be prepared for competent practice, medical specialization, or teaching and service to their fellow men and women regardless of race, creed, or social status.
  • The DLSU-College of Medicine is committed to provide comprehensive extension services and to undertake socially-relevant research with emphasis on the utility of traditional and herbal medicine, infectious diseases and tropical medicine, malnutrition, community mental health and trauma care.
  • The College is further committed to enhance nationalism among members of the community, and to respect Filipino cultural values and tradition.

    • The De La Salle University - College of Medicine is the medical faculty of De La Salle University, an institution administrated by the Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle Brothers), a catholic religious congregation founded by Saint John Baptist De La Salle.
    • As a community of Brothers, administrators, faculty, support staff, and students, it seeks to build an academic community of persons, learners, scholars and citizens imbued with levels of RELIGIO, MORES, and CULTURA. That is to say, Christian in their deals, steadfast in their belief in God, just in their dealings with their fellow men and women, and Filipino in their culture.
    • The De La Salle University College of Medicine aspires to be a nationally accredited and internationally recognized medical college with is Christian in its orientation and responsive to the health needs of the community and the country.
    • It aims to maintain a component faculty whose members excel in their specialties, are concerned with their students, and are oriented to community service. To make this goal possible, it provides adequate equipment and facilities to create an environment conductive to learning and productive research. Its outs a premium on administrators who provide innovative and dynamic leadership in their management style.
    • It sets itself the task of attracting qualified, well-motivated and conscientious students who shall opt to stay in the Philippines after graduation. For this purpose, it offers integrated student support and services that meet the intellectual, emotional, social, and cultural needs of its students.

== College of Medical Radiation Technology==

  • The Bachelor of Sciences in Radiologic Technology degree program is a four year health-related course that provides the country with X -ray /radiologic technologists who are professionally trained in the application of ionizing radiation for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Students in the BS Radiologic Technology course are trained in the used of conventional radiography (X-ray), computed tomography scan, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear medicine , and radiotheraphy. Students are also trained in the use of ultrasound for diagnostic purposes.
  • The first two years of the program are spent under the Assiociate in Health Sciences Education (AHSE) program that consist of general, preparatory courses. The last two years consist of the professional radiologic technology courses.
  • Mission

    • The College of Medical Radiation Technology seeks to produce Christian health professionals for God and country. It aims to be a source of skilled medical radiation technologists who will a part of the medical team of health professionals who serve humanity with integrity in the CALABARZON area.
    • The achieve regional, national and global competitiveness, the colleges establishes affiliations with hospitals that have state-of-the-art equipment and facilities. By utilizing upgraded teaching methods and instructional materials, the College provides its students with quality instruction . Likewise, private and public agencies also help in achieving collaborative learning experiences that develop individuals who are professionally skilled, intellectual advanced, and highly competent.
    • Beyond its commitment to the De La Salle University-Health Sciences Campus Community, The College of Medical Radiation Technology shall be in the forefront of implementing policies and regulations in the health care system of the country.

== College of Nursing and Midwifery==

  • The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program molds students into community-oriented, Christian midwives and professional nurses who are caring, committed, confident, competent, and compassionate. Moreover, it prepares them to function as generalists at the first level of health care practice so that they can become effective members of the health team.
  • Students in the program are developed in the professional nurses and midwives who communicate effectively with the health team, respond to national and global concerns, work for personal and professional growth and initiate research to uplift the quality of the nursing profession in the country.
  • The associate in the Health Sciences Education (AHSE) program, as mandated by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), is being utilized as preparatory curriculum for both nursing and midwifery students. Only after the students have completed the AHSE program are they allowed to take the professional courses and/or requisites.
  • Mission
    • The College of Nursing and Midwifery maintains a constant commitment to the propagation of the Lasallian values of Religion, Mores, and Cultura.
    • With total trust in God, the College envisions itself as a community of Christian educators and leaders in the field of nursing and midwifery who firmly work in harmony and in solidarity with one another.
    • Guided by the teachings of St. John Baptist de La Salle, the College seeks to produce professional nurses and midwives who are Christian in character and appreciative of Cavite history and culture. Moreover, it seeks to harness the transformative powers of the poor in the community towards a healthy way of life.
    • To achieve the vision, the College maintains academic excellence by developing competent and confident faculty who are committed to lasallian values, utilizing creative teaching methods and research in nursing, acquiring updated facilities and equipment, networking with member institutions of the DLSU system, government and nongovernment organizations, and encouraging continuing education as a lifelong goal.

== College of Physical Therapy==

  • Physical Therapy (PT) is an allied health profession, and is one of the disciplines in Rehabilitation Medicine. It is concerned with the evaluation, prevention and treatment of disability with the use of such physical agents as electricity, water, exercise, heat and cold. The most common clinical problems assessed and managed by physiotherapist are paralysis, immobility and sensory loss secondary to impairments of the neuromusculoskeletal system, cardiopulmonary system and delayed motor development. Abroad, physiotherapist do wound care. The ultimate goal of rehabilitation therapy is optimal function despite residual disability. As a result, the specially-abled patient becomes independent and quality of life improved.
  • The Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy is a five-year course that aims to produce competent physical therapist who are responsive to the rehabilitation needs of respect, patience, and compassion; be it in local or foreign setting, through practice, teaching, or research.
  • Mission
    • The College of Physical Therapy aspires to gain national and international respect and recognition. As a disability-oriented College, it seeks to help the country in uplifting the status of the many Filipino disabled through research and service activities.
    • It aims to provide its student with a solid foundation upon which their individual careers may grow. Likewise, it shall develop in its graduates an aptitude for self-learning. In this way, they may continue to gain a high degree of competence, outside of their Alma Mater, not only as therapist, but also as administrators, teachers and researches.
    • In strengthening its training programs, the College shall regularly review and update its facilities and academic programs to ensure these remain relevant to the changing times.
    • Through its community outreach program, the College hopes to increase the awareness of the students regarding the plight of their disabled Filipino brothers so that they may be encouraged to stay and serve the country.
    • Overall, it is the mission of the College of Physical Therapy to provide a high standard of education that is both relevant and responsive to the changing needs of both the profession and country as a whole.

The Medical Center

The DLSU-Medical Center

The De La Salle University Medical Center is a 200-bed hospital offering tertiary level of medical care. The hospital is owned and operated by the Foundation and is the main teaching hospital. The offices of the clinical departments and the full-time clinical faculty members are in this hospital. Since 1995, the expansion program allows a total of 300 beds.

It is committed to the provision of care of persons seeking promotive, preventive, diagnostic, curative and rehabilitative services with a Christian touch. It provides state-of-the-art facilities and outreach and community service (20% of its beds are devoted to charity services). It strives for excellence in the provision of health care by treating the whole person and not just his or her disease.

== The DLSU-HSC Angelo King Medical Research Center==

The DLSU Angelo King Medical Research Center was established in March 1994 to house in one facility, all research activities of the DLSU Health Sciences Campus. As a haven for research minded individuals, the center provides state-of-the-art facilities for basic and clinical researches. The center is active in establishing networks and collaborative researches with like-minded individuals and research centers in the Philippines and the rest of the world. It is one of the fastest growing medical research centers in the Philippines.

Its units are the Clinical Epidemiology Unit (CEU), the Center for Indigenous Medicine (CIM), the Basic Research Unit (BRU), the Bioavailability Unit (BAU), the Tuberculosis Research Unit (TRU) and the Health Allied Research Unit (HARU).

The center has research laboratories, conference rooms and a multi-purpose hall with a seating capacity of four hundred.

Researches within the DLSU-Research Center has been further spurred on by membership in national and international networks like the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) as well as its regional (Southeast Asian Clinical Epidemiology Network) and local affiliates (PHILCLEN). Other networks include the International Network for the Rational Use of Drugs (INRUD) as well as Adverse Drug Reaction Network. The University is also an active member of non-governmental organizations & academic groups like the Phil. Coalition Against Tuberculosis (PHILCAT) and the National TB Study Group.

In terms of research education the Research Center through the CEU is the main training center for the southern Luzon region hosting annual research workshops and seminars and providing facilities for the promotion of research.

Annually, the research center is responsible for the production of over 100 researches from the faculty, consultants, medical residents and students of the heath science campus. Recognition of this work has led to DLSU being recommended as one of the 8 centers of excellence for health research in the Philippines. It now plays a major role in all research-related fields of the country. Some of its work has been published and presented in international conferences like the International Union Against Tuberculosis and other lung diseases (IUATLD). The 23rd International Congress of Internal Medicine has awarded its researches when four of its papers were recognized as among the top ten best local papers. Researches from DLSU are consistently awarded by different component specialty societies like the Phil. Pediatrics Society, the Phil. College of Physicians and the Phil. College of Surgeons.
