FC Talanta is a professional football club based in Nairobi, Kenya.

It cried to life in July 2012 and participated in the President's Cup but was not allowed to participate to any other national championship as the season was already been played. The club will play in the FKF Division One in 2013.

History

Early days and formation

The talent development pilot programme was initiated in four african countries namely Guinea, Cote D’voire, Niger and Kenya. In Kenya the first phase was started in 2010 at Kasarani Stadium and was launched by the then Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Prof. Hellen Sambili. Since then, they have moved to their current location in Karen and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in conjunction with Unicef worked hard in getting them a permanent home.

FC Talanta team members were chosen from the Safaricom Sakata tournament and were graduates of the academy.

Corporate Structure & Sponsorship

The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) recently unveiled the sponsorship of FC Talanta who graduated from the National Youth Talent Academy. The launch was held at the Safari Park Hotel on 19th July 2012. CCK will sponsor FC Talanta to the tune of Ksh 51 million for the next three years.

The Chairman of the Communications Commission of Kenya, Hon. Eng. Philip Okundi, was confident that the team will put Kenya on the world football scene and it will also encourage other organisations to sponsor similar talented teams.

The Executive Director is Jérôme J. Dufourg. In addition, UNICEF has allocated a full time technical advisor to the project, Jonathan Coles, a professional football coach and administrator.

Social Responsibility

The sponsorship of FC Talanta is one of the many CSR efforts undertaken by CCK in youth empowerment geared towards the creation of livelihoods among the youth. This would create more opportunities for other talented youth. Unicef will continue to promote sports development for the youth as it is the right of all children to play in a safe environment.

The Kenya Youth Situational Analysis report highlighted the untapped talent potential among the youth. The programme started with the initial 100 students who were talented in sports and performing arts.

Talanta Academy Soccer Camp

The corporate vision is to develop FC Talanta into a model of successful, transparent and mass movement of Kenyan youth who believe in themselves and can take the country to the next level in soccer. As part of FC Talanta’s commitment in giving back to the community, the team has formed the Talanta Soccer Academy that intends to offer soccer holiday camps. These camps will be held at Nairobi School and will be used in developing soccer talent in Kenya.

It is with this in mind that Talanta Soccer Academy held it’s first soccer camp in December 2012. The camp was a success because the first batch of students and were impressed with the quality of the programme. The kids were also trained on health and nutrition, sports injuries, sport psychology, administration, pre-season training, laws of the game and life skills to better equip them to face life’s challenges.

In 2013, the Talanta Soccer Academy will hold soccer camps during the school holidays in April, August and December. This will keep the students busy during the holidays while at the same time horning their talents in soccer.

FC Talanta has been developed as a national brand for youth and has partnered with a leading youth magazine (the Insyder Magazine) to reach 1,000,000 youth aged 15-19 per month in the trial period of October to December.

In partnership with Futaa.com, an exclusive sports internet media, FC Talanta (through Futaa.com) is accessible to 130,000 unique visitors, 2.3 million monthly page usage and a potential of 550,000 visits per month.

Directly, FC Talanta reached an audience of 100,000 in 2012 through actual soccer matches played.

FC Talanta brand was researched nationally by Teenwise Media (K) and developed by Leverage Inc (SA) that is a platform for integrated youth development by CCK. The Talanta brand has been suggested for youth radio and digital TV.

Achievements

2012 President's Cup

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) confirmed on 26 July 2012 that 32 teams registered for the annual knockout tournament after paying the mandatory Kshs 15,000 entry fee[1]. During the round of 32, FC Talanta played against Tetu Stars and won 2-0 and will play againt Nzoia Sugar in the round of 16.

Division One side Nzoia FC fell to a 2-0 defeat[2] by newly-formed FC Talanta played on Sunday 2 September at the Afraha Stadium. The tournament dubbed president cap (formerly the Moi Golden Cup/ FKL Cup) seeks to involve various football clubs in Kenya.

Talanta now progressed into the quarter finals, where they played powerhouse Tusker FC in early October which the lost by two goals to nil[3]. Other teams in the quarter finals were Gor Mahia vs. Muhoroni Youth, A.F.C Leopards vs. Sofapaka and K.R.A vs. Karuturi Sports.
