John Mitchell was a footballer who played as a full-back with Doncaster Rovers, Newton Heath LYR and Bolton Wanderers in the late 19th century. He played in Doncaster Rovers' first match in 1879, and in the first season of the Football League in 1888.
Mitchell appeared in the first match that Doncaster Rovers played under that name at Rawmarsh F.C. on 3 October 1879. He scored a hat-trick in the first game of the 1881−82 season at Frodingham and Scunthorpe Town F.C., and at least one other goal against Bentley Trinity F.C. in 1880.[1]
At the beginning of the 1883−84 season he was made captain, replacing Albert Jenkins, and was present in the side till Doncaster played Newton Heath LYR in a 2−2 draw on 7 February 1985. Newton Heath signed him soon time after that game, finding him a job in the railway carriage shops of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company from where the club had originated.[1] In 1888, he moved to Bolton Wanderers for just one month,[2] though this did involve him playing twice in the very first season of the Football League.[3][4]
Mitchell returned to Newton Heath where he continued playing till 1891. He played in a total of 204 games for the club, scoring 3 goals, including winning 4 out of 6 Manchester Cup finals he appeared in.[5][6]
