Norteño (Spanish: "northern") is a style of music that originated in Mexico in the early 20th century, based largely on corridos and polka. The [[accordion] is its most characteristic instrument. Banda, a later style, developed from norteño in the 1990s. In the United States, norteño is also called Tex-Mex due to its popularity in Texas.
