Midnight Memories is the third studio album by English-Irish boy band One Direction. It was to be released on 25 November 2013, via Columbia Records, Syco Music and Sony Music, but on 18 November 2013, iTunes accidentally made the album available to multiple customers who had pre-ordered Midnight Memories and they shared their early treats with everyone thus the album has leaked. The album was described by the band as edgier, and as having a "slightly rockier tone" than their previous efforts. Midnight Memories has became the fastest selling pre-order album release in Amazon's fifteen-year history, breaking the record set by One Direction's previous release, Take Me Home (2012). The album was preceded by the release of the singles "Best Song Ever", "Story of My Life".[1]

Composition

One Direction began working on their third studio album whilst embarking on their second international tour, the Take Me Home Tour. The album was announced simultaneously with the news of the band's third world tour, the Where We Are Tour, which subsequently led fans to believe for the title of the album to be Where We Are.[2] Louis Tomlinson announced that the album would have a more "rockier" sound to it than the band's previous releases. The official title of the album was revealed on September 6, 2013, after Zayn Malik tweeted a short video with Harry Styles writing out the word "Mid" out of a pile of alphabet letters on the floor.[3] Later, at 4pm that day, a full video was posted on Instagram, with Styles spelling out the whole name of the album, Midnight Memories.

The album's track-listing was supposedly leaked on July 2, 2013, revealing a vocal collaboration with frequent collaborator Ed Sheeran, who previously wrote "Little Things" and "Moments", on the song "All I Have for You". However, it was later confirmed by the band that they had not recorded a collaboration with Sheeran. Aside from the premiere of "Best Song Ever", two other songs rumoured to appear on the album leaked in full online. "Just Can't Let Her Go" and "Diana", both co-written by the band, leaked online within days of one another. Although "Diana" appears on the final track-listing, "Just Can't Let Her Go" does not. Other tracks recorded for the album which did not make the final cut, confirmed by ASCAP, include "Blame it All on You" and "Whatever She Wants".[4]

The artwork was released early exclusively by The Sun via a tweet from their Twitter account, and was confirmed to the official artwork the following morning by the official One Direction Twitter account in another tweet. The early access was only available to those people who had a membership with the online version of the newspaper. On October 11, the band revealed the final track listing for the album via a "#MidnightMemoriesTrackQuiz" on Twitter. The quiz revealed the names of the tracks with a mixture of hints and filling in the gap style questions. The deluxe edition tracklist was revealed through the release of the deluxe edition on iTunes.[5]

Singles

"Best Song Ever" was released on 22 July 2013 as the official lead single from the album. The track peaked at #2 on the UK Singles Chart. It's music video beat the Vevo record for most viewers within 24 hours on Youtube, clocking in at 12.3 million views, beating the previous record set by Miley Cyrus for "We Can't Stop", which held 10.7 million views in 24 hours.[6] "Story of My Life" was released on October 28, 2013 as the second single from the album.[7] The track premiered on 25 October 2013, playing at 16:00 GST on radio stations across the world[8] and peaked at number four on the UK Singles Chart, despite holding the #1 position on the midweek chart, and continued to lead until Saturday of that week. The video was released on 3 November 2013 at 12:00 EST.

Other songs

"One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)" was released on 17 February 1983 as the official 2013 Comic Relief single, peaking at number one on the UK Singles Chart and achieving success around the world. Despite this, it becomes the first One Direction song not to appear on an album in the UK, only appearing on the Japanese edition of the album.

Track listing

The tracklisting was announced via the band's Twitter account on 11 October 2013.[9] Where the bonus tracks appear as additional tracks in international territories, the British release finds them on a separate four-track bonus disc.[10] Unlike any other release of the album, the Japanese version includes "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)", as well as two further bonus tracks.[11] An exclusive review of the album posted by the Sun on 17 November listed writing credits of many of the tracks.[12]
