Laura Owens
Laura Owens (b. 1970, Euclid, Ohio) is an American painter who emerged in the late 1990s. She is best known for her mixed media paintings of animals and landscapes that incorporate a variety of art historical references and painterly techniques. She lives and works in Los Angeles.
Education
Owens received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1992. In 1994 she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Skowhegan, ME and she received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA.[1]
Work
In 2004 she was the youngest artist ever to receive a retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. She is represented by Gavin Brown Enterprise, Sadie Coles Headquarters, and Galerie Gisela Capitain. She has had solo shows at the Bonnefantan Museum, Kunstmuseum Bonn, Milawaukee Art Museum, Aspen Art Museum, and Miami Moca.
Owens, in addition to Frances Stark and Sharon Lockhart, is from a group that came to be know as the "L.A. Women Artists." [2]
In addition to painting, Owens also creates artists' books and invites other artists to use her studio and staff to create artists' books.[1]
In 2013 Laura Owens exhibited twelve new paintings at 356 Mission, a gallery and communal space, in Los Angeles, CA.[3]
