I learned something today...

On the VALIS(Band) member related wikisites you showed me something I was searching for. The notability tag vs. the speedy delete (db) one. Thank you for spotting the "TPOV" anon's handiwork and handling it -- and I haven't forgotten about checking that Melton reference, it's just going to be a bit of time before I can get to the library where they have that edition of that book. Hey thanks Antaeus. I left a note on the TWI talk page about the groups other un-official name. Just as an aside here, I never knew we were officially The Way International. Bantu Men's Social Centre Query

In response to your question, I have come across some possible links between the YMCA and the Bantu Men's Social Centre: a. the Jan H. Hofmeyr School of Social Work for black Africans was housed in the Social Centre building between 1941 and 1947; b. Max Yergan, and African-American who organized on behalf of the YMCA in South Africa, had envisioned such training for black Africans in 1932; c. a building constructed under Yergan's initiative at Fort Hare was sold and the funds used for the Jan H. Hofmeyr School of Social Work; d. the School was initially started to train social workers for the YMCA. See Alan Cobley's book in the reference section of the article for detail.

Thanks Doc. I found a personal feel for South African history (sad to say but it was) after I visisted Cape Town and the surrounding areas last year. My fiancé is from the DRC but has family there whom we stayed with. Her uncle works as a Doctor around the Mitchell's Plain area... it was an experience in so many different ways to be there. We're going back in January for a traditional wedding. (after getting married in Sept this year in Toronto) Then going to the DRCongo for about a month or so. I added that comment as I was looking through Category:Cult leaders because there is a discussion about putting Ayn Rand in, who is accused more of having a cult of personality with devoted followers than anything approaching the other people in the list. I mention this because it is a matter of putting someone in who is an alleged cult leader. However, this is not similar to the case of Rivenbark, as even the sources that allege Ayn Rand as being involved with a cult, are referring to a cult of personality with devoted followers, not anything religious.

Therefore, I looked through all of the other entries in that category, and most of them are people involved in mass suicide, doomsday cults, and murder, with many cult leaders proclaiming themselves as the messiah and with beliefs often involving aliens. According to the The Way International article, it doesn't appear that this group comes close to any of these other groups. However, allegations of thought control and "love bombing" are relevant to being a cult. Still, if these allegations were only in the 1970s, I don't think it makes sense to put every leader of The Way into the Cult leader category, certainly not without specific allegations on the person's article (though if anything The Way International would belong in Category:Cults, which at least in practice is much more expansive in including somewhat tangentially related things). —Centrx→talk • 06:46, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
