Mulakulam is a quiet village spread over the Kottayam and Ernakulam districts of Kerala, India and is situated on the banks of the River Muvattupuzha. Mulakulam lies in two panchayats viz Piravom and Mulakulam. While Mulakulam North falls under the purview of Piravom panchayat in Ernakulam District, Mulakulam South is governed by the Mulakulam panchayat of Kottayam district. The village is located about 38 kilometers from both Kottayam town and Kochi city (the commercial capital of Kerala). Piravom is the nearest town. It is lush green with thick vegetation, and old tharavads (old houses in Malayalam). The population of this village is about 7500 people.
Agriculture, the land’s traditional and main occupation, is being phased out. Poor availability and high cost of labour coupled with low returns is the root cause. Industries like wooden handicrafts, burnt bricks manufacturing, sand rigging etc. have cropped up. Some of these unregulated industries add to the severe environmental hazards and pollution that is already contributed by Hindustan Newsprint Limited, a newspaper manufacturing giant which is located in a nearby village.
The famous Mulakulam Lakhmanaswamy Temple, The St. John's Syrian Orthodox Cathedral (founded in the early 16th Century), St Mary's Catholic Church, The Thirveesamkulam Temple, etc. are the famous religious institutions. GHSS Namakuzhi, St.Antonies LPSchool, Mulakulam South LP School, CMS LPS, Mulakulam Deseeya VayanaSala, JaiBharath Vayanasala are other important institutions. The Piravom Punja (Paddy fields) and the Mulakulam Padam form the chunk of the agricultural area. The Sree Lakshmana Boat club Mulakulam is a famous rowing team in Kerala.
