João Urbano Pessoa de Vasconcelos Suassuna (better known as João Suassuna, 9 January 1886 – 9 October 1930) was a sertanejo-Brazilian politician. He was the father of the playwright and author Ariano Suassuna.
Biography
From 1924 to 1929, João Suassuna was the president[2] of Paraíba, just before João Pessoa. While Suassuna was the Sertão-culture defender, João Pessoa was a supporter of modernisation[3]. His son and Ariano wrote about the opposition between the two men: [4]
<<Pessoa was representing the towns and the capital middle-class, and was at the avant-garde. My father represented, however, the sertanejos and the status quo. It can be said that they were the last two feudal lords of the sertão...>>[5]
When Pessoa became president, and Suassuna deputy, the military were worried about this situation and president Washington Luís enacted a federal response. Pessoa was murdered July 26, 1930 by a relative of Suassuna.[6].
Suassuna was murdered in revenge, on October 9, 1930 in Rio de Janeiro, after he had gone to Rio for a meeting with Washington Luís, to try to find a solution to social unrest in the sertão.
