Gardel's birthplace

Hi, I'm Binksternet, a veteran Wikipedia editor who is interested in tango (among many other things.) I am the one who made certain that the Tango article tells the reader that tango's origins are not just Buenos Aires but also Montevideo, per UNESCO. Since you are Uruguayan, this action is probably something you appreciate.

When I first started learning tango in 1996, I met some people who said that there was a dispute about Carlos Gardel's birth, that he was most likely born in Uruguay. I accepted that as true for more than a decade. I learned that the dispute was between Toulouse, France, and Tacuarembó, Uruguay, but I did not research the matter, or read any biographies of Gardel. My first edit to the Wikipedia article about Gardel was this one in September 2010, in which I removed BsAs as a possible birthplace, and left Toulouse and Tacuarembó in place. By September 2012 after reading some books I had come to the conclusion that Gardel was born in Toulouse, not Tacuarembó. The books are very good ones, very highly respected:

  • Ruffinelli, Jorge (2004). La sonrisa de Gardel: Biografía, mito y ficción (in Spanish). Ediciones Trilce. pp. 15, 91, 119, 139. ISBN 9974323568.
  • Collier, Simon (1986). The Life, Music, and Times of Carlos Gardel. University of Pittsburgh Press. p. 5. ISBN 0822984989.
  • Barsky, Julián; Barsky, Osvaldo (2004). Gardel: La biografía (in Spanish). Taurus. ISBN 9870400132.
  • de Saint-Blancat, Monique Ruffié; Esteban, Juan Carlos; Galopa, Georges (2006). Carlos Gardel: Sus Antecedentes Franceses (in Spanish). Corregidor. ISBN 9500516349.
  • Bocaz, Luis (March 1986). "Tango Time", UNESCO Courier, p. 11.
  • Alvarez, Eliseo (1995). Carlos Gardel : biografía autorizada (in Spanish). De la Urraca.

I am writing all of this to tell you respectfully that I have reverted your additions to the Gardel biography. These books are very good sources, and they outweigh the sources that you relied on:

  • Payssé, González (1990). "Gardel. Páginas Abiertas". Montevideo.{{cite book}}: CS1 maint: location missing publisher (link)
  • Ostuni (1997). Repatriación de Gardel. Buenos Aires.{{cite book}}: CS1 maint: location missing publisher (link)
  • Bayardo (2000). "Carlos Gardel: A la luz de la Historia". Montevideo.{{cite book}}: CS1 maint: location missing publisher (link)

One editor named Zorzaluruguay came to the article and argued your position, that the Uruguay birthplace theory should be given equal weight to the Toulouse theory. We conducted a dispute resolution procedure about the argument, which you can see at Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution_noticeboard/Archive_45#Carlos_Gardel. I brought in a handful of the best sources, including academic books from Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and USA. The result of that discussion was that "the Uruguay theory gained much less acceptance" than the Toulouse birth. The matter is settled. I see no need to increase the importance of any documents held in the Tacuarembó museum, because they were created in 1920 when Gardel was a grown man. Binksternet (talk) 04:05, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. I understand you position but I will try to get the documents which prove that he was registered as born in Uruguay. I am a novice. I respect academics and I value that you are a veteran, but it should be admitted that his French nationality cannot be proved. It is mere speculation. Therefore, it would be wiser to stress this fact. Is it possible that I upload some photographs from the museum of the birth certificates? A document is a document... Best regards, (Roxyuru (talk) 04:13, 19 May 2013 (UTC))[reply]
It would be good for you to upload some photographs of the various documents. However, Wikipedia is not here to argue the cause of Tacuarembó. Instead, Wikipedia tells the reader what the various parties have argued. The arguments are finished, and Toulouse is proven. Photographs of the Tacuarembó documents would be interesting but they will not help to prove anything. Binksternet (talk) 05:15, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

(talk) I am not making an argument of any cause. I am not defending any cause. I did not even know there was a "cause of Tacuarembó". Who named it as such, by the way? lol I know Wikipedia is about consensus and I know that some books from well-known Argentinian and a Uruguayan historian have a certain weight. However, on practical terms, a fact is a fact and when there is a birth certificate in Uruguay that states that Gardel was Uruguayan, what can you say? At least, be open to know about it. We cannot state something on mere hearsay or speculation, or on a French document that does not even correspond with Gardel´s data. Are French documents more important than Uruguayan ones? Are books more important than documents? Just a couple of questions a novice would ask a veteran. Thanks. (Roxyuru (talk) 01:58, 20 May 2013 (UTC))[reply]

Under construction icon

Thank you for your recent contributions. Getting started creating new articles on Wikipedia can be tricky, and you might like to try creating a draft version first, which you can then ask for feedback on if necessary, with less risk of deletion. Do make sure you also read help available to you, including Your First Article and the Tutorial. You might also like to try the Article Wizard, which has an option to create a draft version. Thank you. I dream of horses If you reply here, please leave me a {{Talkback}} message on my talk page. @ 03:15, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Flora in Uruguay

Hello Roxyuru,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Flora in Uruguay for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Auree 05:54, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Flora of Uruguay

Hi Roxyuru. I have nominated Flora of Uruguay, an article you created, for deletion as it contains no content. While you did indicate the article was still under construction, articles cannot stand alone without any information on the subject whatsoever. I suggest creating a sandbox page in your own userspace instead (for example, User:Roxyuru/Flora of Uruguay), where you may work on building the article at a desired pace using reliable sources. Thanks for your consideration and happy editing -- I look forward to seeing the article reappear in due time. Auree 06:01, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Hello, I'm MusikAnimal. I wanted to let you know that I undid one of your recent contributions, such as the one you made with this edit to Wikipedia:Copyright violations, because it didn’t appear constructive to me. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks, — MusikAnimal talk 15:17, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Roxyuru. While I understand your frustration, I wasn't the one to nominate the subsequent articles for deletion. In any case, it may be best to work on the article in a sandbox—in your own personal user space—first, and then ask an administrator to move the article to Wikipedia main space when it is substantial enough. I explained how to create a sandbox on your talk page, above. As for the title, I personally think "Flora of Uruguay" sounds better. Cheers and good luck, Auree 18:20, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion notice removal

Information icon Please do not remove speedy deletion notices from pages you have created yourself, as you did with Flora in Uruguay. If you believe the page should not be deleted, you may contest the deletion by clicking on the button that says: Click here to contest this speedy deletion, which appears inside the speedy deletion notice. This will allow you to make your case on the article's talk page. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you.

Your contributed article, Flora in Uruguay

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Hello, I noticed that you recently created a new page, Flora in Uruguay. First, thank you for your contribution; Wikipedia relies solely on the efforts of volunteers such as you. Unfortunately, the page you created covers a topic on which we already have a page – Flora of Uruguay. Because of the duplication, your article has been tagged for speedy deletion. Please note that this is not a comment on you personally and we hope you will continue helping to improve Wikipedia. If the topic of the article you created is one that interests you, then perhaps you would like to help out at Flora of Uruguay – you might like to discuss new information at the article's talk page.

If you think the article you created should remain separate, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. Additionally if you would like to have someone review articles you create before they go live so they are not nominated for deletion shortly after you post them, allow me to suggest the article creation process and using our search feature to find related information we already have in the encyclopedia. Try not to be discouraged. Wikipedia looks forward to your future contributions. Kolbasz (talk) 17:05, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Roxyuru. You have new messages at Kolbasz's talk page.

Kolbasz is right, we do not duplicate articles in the Main space of Wikipedia. Keep working on the existing page. It is quite an acceptable topic and it is not likely to be deleted. Please avoid adding so many images to such a small article. 3-4 images should be enough for now. If the article becomes much bigger, a few more can be included. A small gallery under the section "References" could be acceptable. Also we do not place links to the corresponding articles in other language Wikipedias. This happens either automatically (after a while) or manually if one has a login account in Wikidata. In any case, I connected now to the Spanish Wikipedia manually and the link appears in the bottom of the left column. Hoverfish Talk 21:36, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Flora in Uruguay

Hello Roxyuru,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Flora in Uruguay for deletion, because it appears to duplicate an existing Wikipedia article, [[:{{{article}}}]].

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Auree 06:58, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't keep creating parallel articles, first Flora in Uruguay and then "Flora in Uruguay", it just confuses things. Flora of Uruguay is the best title, and no-one is proposing to delete that. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 07:52, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I made some basic format edits at Carnival Museum. A few comments:

  • Please do not just type "In progress" at the top of an article. If you want to let people know you're working on it, use the coding at this link: Template:In use. Note, this is not for "I'm working on it for a few weeks", that code is only for "I am right now working on it". Do not publish an article if it is not yet ready to be seen, otherwise just work on a draft in your WP:Sandbox.
  • Please do not include simple tourist details like ticket prices and open hours. Articles are not how-to guides (see WP:NOT) but address concepts like what is in the museum, why/when it was made, its importance to Uruguayan culture, etc. Stick to large and important issues, and tourists can simply check the museum website if they want practical details.

Please feel free to post on my Talk page with any questions, hope this helps! MatthewVanitas (talk) 21:50, 3 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Roxyuru

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Roxyuru, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

  • The page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. (See section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do.
  • It is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. (See section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion.) Wikipedia has standards for the minimum necessary information to be included in short articles; you can see these at Wikipedia:Stub. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Wikilinking

Hi, and thanks for your work on the English Wikipedia.

I noticed an article you worked on. Just a short note to point out that we don’t normally link:

  • dates
  • years
  • commonly known geographical terms (including well-known country-names), and
  • common terms you’d look up in a dictionary (unless significantly technical).

This applies to infoboxes, too.

Thanks, and my best wishes.
