Pima County is located in the south central part of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 843,746. The county seat is Tucson.

Pima County contains parts of the Tohono O'odham Nation, as well as all of the San Xavier Indian Reservation and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Saguaro National Park.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 23,799 km² (9,189 mi²). 23,792 km² (9,186 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 843,746 people, 332,350 households, and 212,039 families residing in the county. The population density is 35/km² (92/mi²). There are 366,737 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (40/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 75.07% White, 3.03% Black or African American, 3.22% Native American, 2.04% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 13.30% from other races, and 3.21% from two or more races. 29.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 332,350 households out of which 29.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.70% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.20% are non-families. 28.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 10.90% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 21.90% from 45 to 64, and 14.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.70 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,758, and the median income for a family is $44,446. Males have a median income of $32,156 versus $24,959 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,785. 14.70% of the population and 10.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 19.40% are under the age of 18 and 8.20% are 65 or older.
