Tanay is a Sanskrit word, or can be said to be originated from Sanskrit. The meaning of the word Tanay is "son". It is used as a given name in India and other Hindu societies elsewhere.

An example of its usage can be found in the Hanuman Chalisa verse:

pavan tanay sankata harana mangala mūrati rūpa

This translates to:

Son of Vāyu, remover of adversities, one with an auspicious form

This is because Hanuman is considered to be the son of Vayu, the Hindu deity for the wind. and is termed as "pavan tanay".
