A Causa das Coisas
Appearance
"A Causa das Coisas" - in English “The Cause of Things” - it's a portuguese book written by Miguel Esteves Cardoso published in 1986. It's a selection of chronics that he published when he was the director of the newspaper Expresso. The basis theme is his beloved country (Portugal) but board in a satirical and perverse way, always full of dark and obscure humor but, at the same time, always defending it unconscious and patriotically. His chronics are almost impossible to understand if you're not Portuguese because they'll be only a bunch of private jokes to you. The book is divided in two parts: Causas (Causes) and Coisas (Things). There are almost one hundred of chronics about the most variable causes you imagine. The second part is some comments about the illustrations of the unbelievable objects that he managed to find, like old national symbols (mineral water, animal soap, packs of tuna, and many other). Another book of the author, As Minhas Aventuras Na República Portuguesa (in English My Adventures In The Portuguese Republic), is more critical than this and such funny too.
