KRCRTV (Channel 7 is an ABC affiliated station which serves parts of Northern California north of Sacramento, including the towns of Redding and Chico. Its studios are located in Redding. The station broadcasts all of the well-known news and entertainment programs offered by ABC, but also has several of its own programs, including local news programs at 5:30 and 6:30 on weekdays and 6:00 on weekends. News anchors include Gary Gunter and Jenniffer Scarborough, with Mike Kruger as the weatherman, Mike Mangus as the sports correspondent on weekdays and Dave Owens as sports correspondent on weekends. The news programs also features stories of notable local individuals every day. The station also broadcasts a high school quiz bowl program called Academic Challenge on Sundays at 6:30 PM. It began in 1997 and has been hosted ever since then by Gary Gunter. Chico High School usually wins first place. In 2004, the KRCR directors decided to change the format of the show in order to decrease the number of games. It is unknown why this decision was made, or what show will be on during its time slot in weeks with no games. The decision has sparked controversy and debate throughout the Redding and Chico areas.
