Tah Tien (Template:Lang-th) is a 35mm Thai kaiju film released in 1973 directed and special effects created by Sompote Saengduenchai (a.k.a. Sompote Sands).

Synopsis

Chaba's a magic giant toad in beautiful woman form, she's the daughter of a Queen of Naga who spawns on the human world. She lived with an old man in the jungle. One day, a young Bangkok man named Narent came to the jungle to study natural science and zoology. He must adventure with many beasts, including prehistoric creatures and flash flood. Finally, he meets Chaba.

He invited Chaba to visit in Bangkok. With her mischievousness, she made the giant temple guard both met, feuding and fighting fiercely at the midstream of Chao Phraya river.

Production & reception

Tah Tien is the first film from the making by Sompote Saengduenchai, a Thai student who study filmmaking at Toho and Tsuburaya Productions of Japan in early 1960s inspired by the Japanese kaiju film Daimajin in 1966. Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre (under Crown Property Bureau) as producer.

The film was adapted from Thai folklore, Uttai Tawee and urban legend origin of Tah Tien (now a pier, market and tourist attraction in Phra Nakhon District near Grand Palace and Sanam Luang[1]), which is a giant temple guard of two churches, Yak Wat Jaeng (Wat Arun) in Thonburi side with the Yak Wat Pho (Wat Pho) in Phra Nakhon side. Discord and fight in the area today called "Tah Tien" (or spelt "Tha Tian").[2] [1]

When the released has been very successful. It's a film that earns 1.4 million baht (only in Bangkok and only 2 weeks in the provincial, about 3 million baht), with using modern filmmaking techniques of that era. In addition, the themes song in the same name of the film title by Meesak Nakarat still popular.

For the Sompote. This's his very successful work. Then he brought two main characters is Yak Wat Jaeng with Yak Wat Pho to continue roles in the next films is Jumborg Ace & Giant in 1974 including Magic Lizard in 1985.[3] [4]
