Maximiliano Samuel Romero (born 9 January 1999) is an Argentine footballer who plays as a centre forward for Vélez Sarsfield in the Argentine Primera División.
Career
Before making his professional debut, the Argentine forward was close to being transferred to English side Arsenal F.C., for a reported €6 million fee.[1][2] However, after suffering a knee cruciate ligament injury in a reserves game in 2015 he stayed with Vélez. Again in 2016 Arsenal F.C. were rumoured to be interested in Romero once again however nothing came of it. He was also linked with 5 time UEFA Champions League winners Liverpool F.C. in July 2017 as boss Jurgen Klopp looks to improve his attacking options. It would be highly unlikely that he would gain a work permit which would mean he wouldn't be able to play in England. Therefore if he did sign for a Premier League team it's likely that he would go out on loan possibly back to Vélez Sarsfield. [3]
Romero debuted for Vélez at age 17, entering the field in a 0–1 defeat to Sarmiento for the first fixture of the 2016 Argentine Primera División.[4] He also entered the field in the 2–1 victory against Olimpo for the following fixture, in which he scored his first professional goal. He finished his first professional season with 11 appearances (5 as a starter) and 3 goals.
