A game developer is a person or business involved in game development, the process of designing and creating games. Game developers often specialize in a particular type of game.

Board game developer

A board game developer designs board games. Designers of German-style board games are often credited on the box.

Collectible card game developer

Collectible card game developers design games which are played with cards that can be traded and often collected. Richard Garfield, the creator of Magic: The Gathering, is probably the most famous collectible card game developer.

Role-playing game developer

Role-playing game developers create role-playing games (RPGs). Gary Gygax and David Arneson are two of the most famous RPG developers. Together they created Dungeons & Dragons, one of the earliest RPGs which inspired countless others.

Video game developer

A video game developer creates computer or video games. For all other types of developers mentioned here, the role played by the game designer for a video or computer game is analogous to their roles. In a more generic sense, the term "video game developer" can refer to anyone involved in the video or computer development process, such as game programmers and game producers. The term can also refer to a company specializing in game development. Game developmers can also make up a smaller unit or team within a distribution company.
