Roles

  • The Kennedy Center Of Performing Arts still spreads the lie that Domingo sang the most roles in opera history.
  • Domingo= 130 roles, more than any other!!! Wrong: Andreas Dippel, german Tenor, born in Kassel, died 1932, sang over 160 tenor roles. He sang at the MET from 1890 to 1908, even such roles as Cavaradossi.

You can stop beating that particular dead horse. The article now simply states the number of roles and does not make any claim as to who had the most. The full list of Domingo's 147 operatic roles sung on stage is at Repertoire of Plácido Domingo. There is also a separate table there with an additional 21 roles sung in zarzuela, musicals, oratorio, and ones sung in the recording studio only. This latter table is still incomplete. WikiProject Latin America?

I know this is not an important issue, but I do not understand why was this article included in the WikiProject Latin America. Of course he did live in Mexico for 16 years, married a mexican and has sung some non-classical mexican music but he is neither relevant as a Latin American figure nor as a singer of latin American repertoire and lets not forget that he was born in Europe of Spanish parents, has lived most of his life in the States and he is not legally a citizen of an Latin American country.--Karljoos (talk) 18:29, 15 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, he did win Grammys for Best Latin Pop Performance for Always in my Heart (Siempre en mi corazon) and Best Mexican-American Performance for 100 years of Mariachi. Most full-time Latin singers couldn't hope to replicate that. Several of his recordings have contained Latin American music (and not just from Mexico). He was Person of the Year at the Latin Grammys a few years ago too. He also owns a house in Mexico and still spends a lot of time there, beyond the fact that he grew up there and had Mexican citizenship for most of his younger years (his parents became naturalized Mexican citizens too). His oldest two kids are Mexican born (although Placi Jr. has recently exchanged his Mexican citizenship for American citizenship). Of course, Domingo's a Spaniard, but his ties to Mexico and Latin America are very strong. He's said so himself. You don't have to be from a place to be relevant to it. It was originally tagged under WikiProject Latin America because the bot tagged everything under the category "Latin music". As you mentioned, he has recorded several Latin music albums which is why he is covered by WikiProject Latin music. That said, he'd be probably tagged under Mexico rather than just Latin America. make separate section on health?

Hi, The last paragraph of the section on Domingo's family contains some health issues that he has suffered from. (I added the material on his embolism and subsequent recovery.) I am wondering if we should create a new section on his health; it doesn't seem appropriate to keep it where it is, since it is not about his family. NO, we don't need to delve that deeply into an artist's life!! If, at some point, health reasons cause him to withdraw from whichever commitments he has made, a mention that is if this is the reason would appropriate. Separate section - NO. Viva-Verdi (talk) 00:36, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The simplest thing is to rename the section "Family and personal life". Under such a heading, a brief mention would be appropriate. KBE in lede. Why?

This person has received numerous awards from across the world. Why does the award from only one such state, the United Kingdom, get mentioned in the opening sentence? Surely this is not done for nationalist reasons, namely this is the English language Wikipedia and an editor wants to make a special British claim on this very famous, but non-British, person? 195.103.66.30 (talk) 23:25, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it was done for any ulterior motive. I find that many non-British people, especially ones from countries which have no knighthoods or aristocratic titles, tend to give them rather exaggerated importance. Having said that, I agree that post-nominals are in general over-used on Wikipedia. Their use in this case does go against the guidance in this section of the Wikipedia Manual of Style: "Post-nominal letters, other than those denoting academic degrees, should be included when they are issued by a country or widely recognizable organization with which the subject has been closely associated. Honors issued by other entities may be mentioned in the article, but should generally be omitted from the lead". Domingo is not particularly associated with the UK. The problem is with the lede in the Enrico Caruso article which should be expanded, not this one. Note also that Caruso had a 25 year career, ending with his death at 48, while Domingo continues an active career at the age of 74 and has a career spanning over 50 years which entails more material in the lede. This has nothing whatsoever to do with Domingo's or Caruso's personal modesty or their greatness as singers. We all get that you don't like Domingo. You have been trolling this talk page since 2007 with your off-topic and inappropriate comments, and really it's getting very boring.
