NIMBY, acronym for Not In My Back Yard. Often used to refer to the behaviour of people when proposals to build in their area are put forward - and even more so if the people who have this view are powerful and able to counter the proposals effectively, such as rich landowners, MPs etc. See also drawbridge mentality.
