Resource Request

Fixing references and common medical problems!
Warning: for legal reasons, we must note that the Resource Exchange cannot fix any medical problems. But it can fix references.

Finding a source

Tips for finding a source yourself
  • Send a request to the author(s) of research papers for a copy of their paper by email
  • Check on Google Books, or your local library or national library may be able to obtain it through an interlibrary loan or subscription
  • Search Google Scholar for archived copies of journals in institutional repositories
  • Check whether your alma mater's library offers electronic document delivery services for alumni—many do, for a small fee

Note that sites like LibGen and Sci-Hub offer direct, free access to a very large range of publications, but there are legal questions around their use and neither the Wikimedia Foundation nor the Wikipedia community endorses them.

Making a request
  • A request may be an open question or you may ask for a specific journal, article or work
  • All kinds of sources are possible here: newspapers, magazine article, databases, encyclopedias, court decisions, laws, books, etc.
  • We cannot perform full book copy requests due to copyright. Please ask for specific pages that relate to the article(s) you need them for
  • You may contact research helpers directly or make a request on this page
  • To receive email without disclosing your email address publicly, configure your email in Special:Preferences
  • Provide as much detail as possible: a full citation with author, title, publisher, and date or identifiers like DOI, ISBN ISSN, PMID, etc.
  • Once a request has been fulfilled add the {{Resolved}} template.
  • Filled requests are archived.
  • Requests unfilled after three months will be archived

Fulfilling a request

  • Anyone may offer advice and fulfill requests.
  • Indicate which part or parts of the request is being handled so others do not duplicate your work.
  • Notify (mention) the requester using {{ping|REQUESTER_USERNAME}}
  • You can:
    • point to a pre-existing electronic document by giving its URL ( http://... )
    • share scans of pages or documents using a file-sharing service, provided it is legal
    • upload out of copyright works to Wikimedia Commons and/ or Wikisource (but be careful that this does not breach your own institution's policies)
    • email a link or plain text to a requester using the Special:EmailUser feature but for attachments, you need to ask them to mail you first so you can reply.

Copyright tips:

  • Respect copyrights and terms of services of any online services you use.
  • Share content in a limited manner that is targeted at as few individuals as possible to achieve a specific improvement on Wikipedia. All content is shared under a presumed non-commercial, educational, fair use purpose in order to conduct research about topics on Wikipedia and/or to improve Wikipedia content.
  • Share copies privately rather than with a publicly accessible link whenever possible. Copyrighted articles from print publications or copies obtained through online databases should not be uploaded for unrestricted distribution via open websites. Preferably, do not share login access codes for entire websites; rather, share only an individual copy of a resource.
  • Remember that you take on the individual risk when sharing content, and act in a way that is comfortable and safe for you. Individual editors are solely responsible for sharing copyrighted content and assume all legal risks.

Request for extracts from Tusa and Royal's recent book on artefacts from the site of the Battle of the Aegates

There is a recently published book:

  • Royal, Jeffrey G.; Tusa, Sebastiano, eds. (2019). The Site of the Battle of the Aegates Islands at the End of the First Punic War. Fieldwork, Analyses and Perspectives, 2005–2015. Bibliotheca Archaeologica. Vol. 60. Rome: L'Erma di Bretschneider. ISBN 9788891318329.

From this I would like the six pages of:

  • Tusa, S; Goold, J (2019). "Archaeological finds as true evidences of the Egadi battle". In Royal, Jeffrey G.; Tusa, Sebastiano (eds.). The Site of the Battle of the Aegates Islands at the End of the First Punic War. Fieldwork, Analyses and Perspectives, 2005–2015. Bibliotheca Archaeologica. Vol. 60. Rome: L'Erma di Bretschneider. pp. 13–18. ISBN 9788891318329.

and the chapter:

  • Murray, William (2019). "The warships: construction and tactics". In Royal, Jeffrey G.; Tusa, Sebastiano (eds.). The Site of the Battle of the Aegates Islands at the End of the First Punic War. Fieldwork, Analyses and Perspectives, 2005–2015. Bibliotheca Archaeologica. Vol. 60. Rome: L'Erma di Bretschneider. pp. 253–290. ISBN 9788891318329.

for Battle of the Aegates, which I am working up for a FAC.

Many thanks, Gog the Mild (talk) 12:53, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Right now it looks like there is only one library holding of this book (OCLC 1012608445 and OCLC 1108887480). That will make it hard for RXers to find. buidhe 13:35, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. That would explain my difficulties in tracking it down. There is a preview of the 2019 edition here including the title page, if that helps. Gog the Mild (talk) 14:03, 16 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Gog the Mild: believe it or not, I live only about an hour away and should be able to track down this book sooner or later if you still want it (probably later because libraries around me are shut down for the foreseeable future). Eddie891 Talk Work 01:58, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Eddie891, that would be great. But please don't put yourself out for it. This source may contain some interesting and usable information, but it is by no means vital to the article. You may want to check ahead that it is actually available - there only being one copy available in a library in the world sounds a little odd to me. Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 11:33, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Doing... , but won't be done until after the library opens again Eddie891 Talk Work 14:41, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies Gog the Mild, but revisiting this the record of the item appears has disappeared from the collection I have access to. Doesn't look like I'm going to be able to get it for you it. Sorry, Eddie891 Talk Work 15:44, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries Eddie and many thanks for your efforts. Gog the Mild (talk) 17:27, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Gog the Mild, I followed up with SUNY Binghamton, and they it turns out they don't have a copy, the WorldCat listing was based on an order record. Given that the book appears to only be held in the Library of Congress, they recommended emailing the author(s) and explaining 1) the volunteer nature of your work 2) there isn't a library with it and 3) it costs $266. They think there's a decent chance the authors would be willing to provide you with the chapter/pages Eddie891 Talk Work 12:24, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Worth a go. Thanks. I'll email the surviving author. Gog the Mild (talk) 12:31, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Gog the Mild, I've just looked into this, and as far as "my" library is concerned, this volume is currently (still) being processed, which means it will be available here in a few weeks time. So if your attempts prove unavailing, let me know. — Pajz (talk) 14:43, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Takeoff!

I started a stub article on the novel Takeoff! including the one source that I had, and based on the ISFDB link for this novel[1] there are reviews in at least the following:

  1. Review by Spider Robinson (1980) in Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact, August 1980
  2. Review by Tom Easton (1980) in Analog Science Fiction/Science Fact, October 1980
  3. Review by Baird Searles (1980) in Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine, November 1980
  4. Review by Steve Brown (1980) in Thrust, #15, Summer 1980
  5. Review by Tom Staicar (1981) in Amazing Stories, May 1981
  6. Review by Donald M. Hassler (1986) in Fantasy Review, October 1986

If anyone can find copies of any of those reviews, to either provide me with a copy or to add information directly to the article if interested, that would be appreciated! :) BOZ (talk) 14:29, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@BOZ: #4 (Thrust #15, Summer 1980) is available online at the Internet Archive (see page 44). —Bruce1eetalk 17:25, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@BOZ: Archives of Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine issues can be found here while Amazing Stories are here. While Analog Science Fiction is here, 1980 is not covered. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 18:05, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Neopeius and Mike Christie: Do either of you have the above sources, or different sources that would help with the article? Kees08 (Talk) 16:27, 10 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Bruce1ee and MrLinkinPark333, I added something from those three reviews to the article. :) BOZ (talk) 20:54, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, BOZ and Kees08, not sure how I missed this ping -- I only noticed it because I was on this page looking for something else. I've checked and I do still have the two 1980 Analog issues, but they're in a box somewhere in the basement and I've no idea which one. I'll try to remember to let you know when they eventually come out, probably later this year. I don't have any copies of Fantasy Review, and a quick look through my references finds nothing. According to Google Books there's a short review in Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Review Annual 1988, edited by Latham and Collins. Oxford University Press entry on Louis Bobozo

For Louis Bobozo.

Thanks, Indy beetle (talk) 08:08, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Indy beetle, I do not have access to that database but I do have access to the print volume where "a version of this article originally appeared" (Dictionary of African biography, 2012). My experience from other Oxford Reference databases is that they mostly contain identical copies of the printed articles, but I am not familiar with the African American Studies Center specifically. Feel free to respond to this comment if you are interested in a copy from the printed version. — Pajz (talk) 08:44, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Pajz: A copy of the article from the print addition would be most welcome. -Indy beetle (talk) 09:46, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Indy beetle, unfortunately, the print edition does not seem to contain such an entry. Might be an "online-first" update to the dictionary (to be included in some future edition). In that case the "A version of this article originally appeared in The Dictionary of African Biography" bit seems a bit misleading ... Anyhow, looks like you'll need to wait for someone with electronic access. — Pajz (talk) 16:35, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

2008 newspaper sources to confirm death of Leo Gurko

Hello. I'm looking for 2008 newspapers to determine date of death/place of death for my draft on Leo Gurko. I have a December 14, 2010 source from The Ukiah Daily Journal that gives only years for him and his wife's death. His wife's year of death (1988) checks out with her entry in the Salem Press Biographical Encyclopedia. If this is the case, then I hope there is a 2008 newspaper source that mentions his death. As he moved from Poland and worked in New York for a lot of his career, there could be sources from New York newspapers. Unfortunately, i had no luck with Newspapers.com. Thanks! MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:50, 10 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

MrLinkinPark333, I don’t see any newspaper sources, but according to America’s GenealogyBank, Gurko was born January 4, 1914, and died in Manhattan on September 30, 2008. There are also articles from Something About the Author and Gale Literature: Contemporary Authors, if you are interested. John M Baker (talk) 03:40, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@John M Baker: I already have both encylopedias from Archive.org (haven't cited them yet). Neither had his death date of the versions I found. As for GenealogyBank, I haven't used that before, and I don't think I could use it for a source. But that can help narrow down the search though. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 03:44, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MrLinkinPark333: The information from America’s GenealogyBank is directly from U.S. Social Security records, so I would think it would be acceptable, subject to the usual caveats on use of a primary source. It would be unacceptable for a biography of a living person, but of course Gurko is no longer living. John M Baker (talk) 18:07, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@John M Baker: While I'm not sure if I could use it, could you send me the GenealogyBank entry with the URL? I don't have access to it. I might keep this open as well in case someone digs up a September/October 2008 article. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:58, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@MrLinkinPark333: Sent. John M Baker (talk) 02:21, 14 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Update: I have received the GenealogyBank entry. I'm keeping this up a bit in case someone else has found newspaper sources cause I'm not 100% if I can use this source for a death date. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 22:45, 16 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

2002 magazine sources for album ratings verification

Hello. I'm looking for three magazine reviews of The True Meaning that were supposely published in 2002. Problem is, their website archives don't go all the way back to 2002. They are: NME, The Source and Vibe. Both NME and Vibe are linked to a dead Tower.com link and an archived version doesn't seem to mention either magazine. If the album was indeed reviewed in these magazines, I'm looking for whether the review scores do match up or not. If they do, then I can cite the hardcopy instead. Thanks! The source is used in Joanne Jordan (talent agent) to verify this content:

In a 2008 article, TV Guide referred to Jordan as the "force behind" the "I'm F-ing Ben Affleck" video, and in the same article Jimmy Kimmel quipped, "I wish I'd had her in high school when I was looking for a date to the prom."

For Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Central Talent Booking, I merged this material from Central Talent Booking to Joanne Jordan (talent agent) using this version of the Central Talent Booking article but would like to confirm whether this offline source is accurate and to see if there is more biographical information that could be used.

Hi Mike, The publisher, Archaeology South-East, is part of UCL, and they have been active at Whitehawk, so it's possibly a paper they put out (although oddly it's not listed as being in their library - although if you log in as a student more results may appear). They have a general email address (ase@ucl.ac.uk), so it may be worth dropping them a line to see if they have any more details. Cheers - SchroCat (talk) 13:11, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

page 194 of 香港利氏家族史 (Chinese version of Profit, victory & sharpness : the Lees of Hong Kong by Vivienne Poy, published by University of Hong Kong Press)

For Hong Kong Japanese School - I want to find the Chinese name of the "Ling Ying Building" (where the Japanese school was first located) but Google Books will not allow me to view page 194, which I believe should have the Chinese characters for that.

@WhisperToMe: it might refer to zh:嶺英中學. Searching Ling Ying in https://mmis.hkpl.gov.hk/web/guest/old-hk-collection led to me an article LING YING SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY on Hong Kong Daily Press, 1939-06-02, which said the school had premises in the Lee Gardens (利園), which is exactly Lee family's properties. The zhwiki article says the school was closed in 1970. I guess its premises were used for the Japanese school then.
You should verify this with better sources or alumni from that period.--Roy17 (talk) 17:36, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Roy17: I'm not in the HK region right now, but I'm checking online sources. zh:香港日本人學校 already states "1971年(昭和46年)4月12日 - 學生人數増加,要借附近的嶺英校舍,一部(幼稚園部、小學1、2年)到該處上課。同年5月10日,設立香港日本人學校新校舍建設準備委員會。" so that seems to be the right track. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:39, 23 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A magazine article and encyclopedia entry for M. B. Goffstein

Hello. I'm planning to make an article on children's author and illustrator M. B. Goffstein. I'd like the following sources so I don't have to reuse the same encyclopedia sources I found on the Internet Archive over and over: *This article from Children's Literature in Education from Springer

It seems questionable that the quality of a photograph in a 1916 Indian journal would be to be that much higher than what we already have. While it is of course a possibility, for many journals from that time and provenance that Commons copy would be a perfectly accurate representation of how their pictures looked in print ... — Pajz (talk) 07:29, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Comparative anatomy of vertebrates

Hi all, I would like to ask for some help accessing two sources relating to animal anatomy. I'd like to improve my coverage and sourcing of animal anatomy in the anatomy sphere where I edit. I've found two textbooks that I think are suitable based on looking around at what books are recommended in university courses and this review paper [21]

  • Kardong, Kenneth (2018). Vertebrates : comparative anatomy, function, evolution (8th ed.). ISBN 9781260092042.
  • Hildebrand, Milton; Goslow, George (2001). Analysis of vertebrate structure (5th ed.). Wiley. ISBN 978-0-471-29505-1.

Unfortunately purchasing these two sources is prohibitively expensive (about $300 in my part of the world). Does anyone have access or a way to access these online, or suggestions where I may be able to go to get some help accessing these? I am not keen on borrowing from a library because I see myself using them over a number of years and that will not be very convenient. Thanks for your help or suggestions, --Tom (LT) (talk) 11:28, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Tom (LT): The 3rd edition (2002) of Kardong is available to borrow at the Internet Archive here (free registration is required). The 2nd edition (1982) of Hildebrand is also available to borrow at the Internet Archive here. I don't know if these earlier editions of the books will help you. —Bruce1eetalk 11:43, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Tom, as far as I can see, neither of these works is among the resources currently accessible through WP:TWL. Since full book scans/copies cannot be provided through this page for legal reasons (see the notice at the top), I do not think that we can be of much help if what you need are the entire volumes. Of course, if you need scans of particular chapters from any of those books and you cannot access them yourself in your library, feel free to request them on this page. Depending on your country of residence, there might be a Wikimedia chapter that may be willing to purchase the books for you (see eg de:Wikipedia:Förderung/Zugang zu Fachliteratur for Austria/Germany/Switzerland; other chapters might not have a dedicated programme but may be willing to support volunteers through some type of microgrant, cf the presumably incomplete list at meta:Grants#To Wikimedia volunteers). — Pajz (talk) 13:06, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@LouisAragon: I assume you've tried looking for the articles here and didn't find them? RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 02:51, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(1) Is the URL supposed to imply that it is available electronically? If so, I don't find any indication that it is. (And it would surprise me a bit if it were. Brill has a reference collection that is continuously updated, but that title doesn't seem to be part of it; the older entries are available on iranicaonline.org anyway. And it has an e-book collection, but I've never seen them - or, in fact, other publishers of similar works - offer individual fascicles before the volume is completed.) (2) The pages that you request are the entire fascicle (entries "Khavaran-Nama" through "Khomeini"). Therefore, fulfilling the request is difficult on legal grounds. As far as I'm concerned, I cannot copy the fascicle in its entirety, but if you can narrow down the request to a few specific entries (list of entries) and/or a smaller page range - say, half of it or less -, that is something I would likely be able to supply. Obviously you can also wait and see if someone else can help you obtain the entire document. — Pajz (talk) 18:18, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@GZWDer: That timesmachine link is from the July 6, 1918 issue of The New York Times. Newspapers.com has this issue and there is a piece on Aaron Ward on page 9. I've clipped the article here. The scan isn't that great, but you should be able to make it out. —Bruce1eetalk 17:17, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've found a (slightly) better scan of that article at Newspaperarchive.com here. —Bruce1eetalk 17:29, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@GZWDer: Are you happy with the scans I clipped? Can this request be tagged as resolved? —Bruce1eetalk 09:14, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

For Second Battle of Oituz

The google preview (at least via the search) yields a text beginning "November 10 is the date of the second great battle of Oituz , right in the area of action of the mentioned group . The fights lasted until November 15 , 1916 , and the initiative belonged to the Romanian army . During November 11 , 12 , and 13 ..." on p. 122. This is clearly about this battle, but I am unable to see anything further. I'd like the have the given page, and any subsequent/preceding pages that refer to this as well.

Chapters from 2 Frost books on Northern wars

I am enlarging the articles in the Spanish Wikipedia on the es:Segunda guerra nórdica, es:Guerra sueco-danesa (1658-1660), es:Guerra Sueco-Danesa (1657-1658) and other related articles and I would like to be able to check the chapters from the books above. If the page ranges are too wide, maybe pages 163-183 from ISBN 9780582064294 & 53-70 from ISBN 0521544025 would be enough for now for me to work on. I have checked my Cambridge core access from Wikipedia but it seems the chapter above is not among the available ones for the Cambridge book.

Thanks in advance for all your help, Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 16:22, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Rowanwindwhistler: Most of the page range from 26-52 is available from GBooks here (I don't have access to: 29-30, 36-37, 43-44, 50-51). As for 53-70, only the first three pages are there. If you can't access the GBook link, please let me know and I'll forward over what I do have access to. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 16:58, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
See, pp. 29-30, pp. 36-37, pp. 43-44, pp. 50-51. --Gazal world (talk) 17:09, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both for your advice, sometimes I do not really know how I can forget so easily about the basics... Sorry about that. Anyhow, it seems GBook keeps changing the visible pages. I have managed to check 34-38, 41-45, 48-52, 55-59 & 62 but then I cannot see the pages before and after those ranges. If you happen to still have access to some of the others, I would be grateful if you send them to me so that I can check them for relevant information for the articles too.--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 18:57, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Rowanwindwhistler: Have you checked both GBooks links? (Canada/India). If so, let me know if you get access to any more pages. The Indian version gave me 29-30, which I didn't already have access to. So, if I understood you correctly, you're still looking for 26-33 39-40 46-47 from one chapter, and 53-54 60-61 63-70 from the other chapter? --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 20:58, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I have. It is actually there where I got the pages I could read. And they keep changing (i. e. some I could read before are no longer visible while others that were not available before can be seen now, for some reason). From my original page ranges for ISBN 0-521-54402-5 I still could not read pages number 26-27, 33, 39-40, 47, 54, 60-61, 63-65 and 67-70. Maybe I will at another time as they keep changing but if you happen to have them in hand, it would be great if you could send them over... If not, no problem, I will keep checking now and then. Thanks.--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 21:27, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
