Sirsi is a town and a Nagar Panchayat in the Sambhal district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.[1]A town that represents Shia culture as well as home to other communities. Agriculture serves as a major source of livelihood to the towners. The town gets to glimmer once every year during Moharram. During this time, long processions are carried out publicly, Majlis e Aza (gathering to mourn) is organized in numerous congregation halls. On several days, meals are prepared on large scales where everyone gets invited. Traditionally, this is known as 'Nazr e Maula' (consecration).

Sunni, Muslims, who were minority until 1950s, have not only improved in numbers but also their social status. As a matter of fact, their political involvement is also commendable as they put a brake on majoritarian politics of Sirsi. A testimony to which is the current Chairman of Sirsi, who belongs to a minority.

Hindus constitute about 25% of Sirsi's population. It will be worthless, if the backward caste section is not mentioned at this point. In respect with the impoverished section of Hindu community, a lot has improved over a period of time.

Sirsi has been land of Urdu Poets for centuries. There have been prominent names among the list of Urdu poets such as Sayyad Sirsvi, Allama Sibtain Sirsvi, Bedil Sirsvi, Johar Sirsvi, Ali Qasid Sirsvi, Nayyar Sirsvi, Sahil Sirsvi, Shuja'at Sirsvi. Among the contemporaries, Raza Sirsvi is a renowned name in and outside Sirsi.

Demographics

As of 2011, the Indian census,[3] Sirsi had a population of 64,345. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Sirsi has a literacy rate of 70%, which is above the national average: male literacy is 78%, and female literacy is 64%. In Sirsi, 19% of the population is under 6 years of age.
