Gay liberation movements were most prevalent in the 1960s and 1970s. These movements urged gays and lesbians to "come out". To come out represents to publicly reveal one's sexuality to friends, family and others. These movements involved LGBT in North America, Australia, New Zealand and Western Europe.

Stonewall riots of 1969 were the precursor to the new movement.
