Manuel José

Manuel José (born 1946) is a Portuguese football manager, who has coached Sporting Lisbon, Boavista FC, Belenenses, and SL Benfica, among other teams.

Al-Ahly

He replaced Paulo Autuori as Benfica manager in the middle of the 1996/97 season, but finished in 3rd place. Despite his bad results, he remained for the next season. A humiliating 3-1 defeat to Rio Ave, lead Benfica's direction to sack him.

His best results were a Cup of Portugal win, in 1992, to Boavista, and several victories in Egyptian football competitions as a coach of clubs like Al-Ahly, from Cairo. Since joining Al-Ahly, he has helped give the team a record breaking unbeaten run of 71 matches. He has become an increasingly popular character with the Egyptian fans and is one of the most famous faces in Egyptian soccer. He also managed to win the African Champions League with the team 3 times (2001, 2005, 2006), making him the first coach to achieve such a feat. In 2001, his first year, he guided the Cairo club to CAF Champions League glory with a squad comprising mostly of promising youngsters like Hossam Ghaly, now at Tottenham Hotspur.

Honours

Manuel Jose was honoured by the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak with the Medal of Sport of First Class for his contributions to Ahly and Egyptian Football on the 24 of December, 2006. This is the highest honour for a Portuguese citizen in Egypt. He has also won the bronze medal with Ahly at the Fifa Club World Cup Japan 2006 after leading a great performance. So far, he won 10 championships with Egyptian giants Ahly. Ahly fans in Egypt call him the King and he is the only coach to achieve the African Champions League 3 times and he is the one who lead Ahly to a massive win (6-1)against Cairo rivals Al-Zamalek during the 2001/2002 season. Moreover, His first ever match with Ahly was a friendly against Real Madrid, where Ahly won 1-0.
