History
KFYR-TV, the flagship station, signed on December 19, 1953 as the third television station in North Dakota. The three satellites all signed on from 1957 to 1960. Together, the 4 stations cover all of western North Dakota and parts of eastern Montana. NBC North Dakota formerly had a secondary affiliation with ABC shared with rival KX Television until full-time ABC affiliate ABC West signed on.
The network was owned by the Meyer family, who signed on KFYR-AM 550 in 1925 right through 1997, when it was sold to Sunrise Television Corporation. Sunrise sold it to Wicks Television (part of The Wicks Group of Companies of New York City, through a holding company, North Dakota Television, LLC.) in 2002. The stations have always been NBC affiliates.
Hoak bought KFYR and its satellite stations in July 2006, as well as KVLY-TV and KXJB-TV (LMA with Catamount Broadcasting) of Fargo and KSFY of Sioux Falls, SD and its satellite stations. On November 17, 2006, the sale was approved by the FCC.
In January of 2007, KMOT-TV began broadcasting a full half-hour of news at 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. KMOT has added a weather position and photographer/reporter to their staff. This is the first time in almost 7 years that KMOT has been able to air a full half-hour newscast.
Station information and programming
KFYR broadcasts local newscasts at 6 am, 12 pm, 5 pm, 6 pm and 10 pm Central Time Monday through Friday; 6 pm and 10 pm on Saturday, and 10 pm on Sunday. KFYR anchors include Monica Hannan and Alan Miller.
KMOT produces its own newscasts on weekdays at 6 pm and 10 pm, and rebroadcasts KFYR's other newscasts. KQCD and KUMV place local inserts into KFYR's newscasts. KMOT anchors include Mark Lyman and Nick Dreyer.
The stations occasionally share stories with co-owned KVLY. The five stations simulcast key North Dakota sport events and share certain equipment, such as remote broadcasting vehicles.
