The film is directed by Russell Mulcahy and produced by Paul Anderson. The film will adapt several plot elements from Resident Evil: Code Veronica [1] and will feature several new characters and creatures from the game series.

The film was originally intended to be released in the United States on September 7, 2007 [2] but was pushed back to September 21, 2007 [3].

Synopsis

Upon emerging from her hideout in the Nevada desert, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is quickly joined by old friends Carlos Oliveira (Oded Fehr) and L.J. (Mike Epps). They also meet up with a whole batch of other survivors, including no-nonsense tough girl Claire Redfield (Ali Larter), K-Mart girl (Spencer Locke), and a fire-powered Florence Nightingale named Nurse Betty (Ashanti). Now instilled with super-human strength, senses, and dexterity as a result of the biogenetic experimentation conducted on her by the Umbrella Corporation, Alice and the rest of the survivors set out to eliminate a virus that threatens to turn every living human undead, and ensure that the mysterious organization pays the price for their horrific crimes against humanity.

Plot Summary

Template:Spoilers Resident Evil: Extinction is set in between 3 - 5 years after the events of Apocalypse. The Umbrella Corporation has failed to control a series of T-Virus outbreaks around the world, killing nearly every human. With little of humanity left, a handful of survivors are travelling around the remnants of the world in heavily armored convoys that go to the least populated parts of the world.

Plot Details

The opening scene consists of Alice being thrown into a pit of dogs. This was confirmed by the writer himself Paul WS Anderson. Alice will fight her way out of the pit. Milla Jovovich was also interviewed while in the process of shooting this scene. The interview was on YouTube, but was soon removed.

  • The complex story is said to pick up 5 years after the events of Apocalypse. [4]
  • The beginning of "Extinction" picks up with Alice and cabdriver L.J. (Epps) riding a modified school bus across the wasteland once known as the city of lights, Las Vegas. Desperate for help anywhere they can get it, the duo recruit no-nonsense tough girl Claire Redfield (Ali Larter) and a fire-powered Florence Nightingale named Nurse Betty (Ashanti). Some scenes of the trailer hint at a romance between Carlos and Alice.

Production

Resident Evil: Extinction was officially announced by Sony Screen Gems on June 13, 2005 months after Apocalypse's release in North America. The producers also openly discussed the possibility of following this sequel with a fourth film.[7] However, a more recent press release indicates that this third film may in fact be the last.[8] This was later confirmed in the official plot synopsis as revealed by ComingSoon.

On November 7, 2005, Davis Film, Constantin Film and Screen Gems announced their distribution rights worldwide. The film's title was also later changed from Resident Evil: Afterlife to Resident Evil: Extinction with the film's director Russell Mulcahy signing on. Principal photography began in Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico [9] in May, 2006 [10] (after being pushed back from November 05 > March 06 > April 06 > May 06) and entered post-production in late July 2006 [11]. The film's budget is estimated to be $45,000,000 and the special effects are covered by Tatopoulos Studios, whom also worked on the 2006 film Silent Hill.

In late June, 2006 Sony released the first 2 production stills [12]. Details regarding production have been top-secret [13] but minor details have been revealed, "fans of the series will be pretty damn happy with a new boss monster that's going to rear its ugly head in the film".

Game Head Special

During an episode of Game Head on Spike TV, viewers were treated to a special sneak peek at the film [14]. The following details were revealed:

  • The film takes place 3-5 years after Apocalypse.
  • Angela Ashford will not be returning.
  • Milla Jovovich's character Alice is now on her own.
  • The world is overrun with the T-Virus, and infected crows will attack the convoy.
  • The convoy is actually a school bus, and an ambulance with grates and bars covering the windows will also be used.
  • The sinister Albert Wesker (Jason O'Mara) is having a conversation with an Umbrella Executive (John Eric Bentley) in a boardroom.
  • We are also shown Dr. Isaacs's lab.
  • It is unknown as to whether Alice will be good or evil.

Promotional Material

Teaser Trailer

On February 16, 2007 the film's teaser trailer was shown with Ghost Rider[15]. On February 17, 2007 Sony launched the film's website with the confirmation of the September 21 release date. It was also revealed that the film was rated R by the MPAA for Non stop violence, Language and Some Nudity. The trailer since has been placed on the official site and also has shown with Disturbia.

The trailer has been structured to be similar of the "Regenerate" teaser trailer for Resident Evil: Apocalypse. The teaser trailer is a promo for the Las Vegas nightlife and features the song "I Know It's You" by The Crystal Method which features vocals by Milla Jovovich..

Poster

In May 2007, the teaser poster was leaked onto the internet via a fansite. It was unclear whether or not the poster or real or a hoax [16]. But on May 8, 2007, IGN released the poster on their website. [17].

Game connections

  • Mulcahy stated that several new creatures will appear. Only the Crows have been confirmed.
  • Like Resident Evil 5 (the game), Extinction takes place in a dry, harsh, desert wilderness. This is a huge departure from the usual dark and drab locations of most zombie films and games. Try comparing to From Dusk Till Dawn.
