At E3 2007, Sony released information about a new version of the PlayStation Portable, known as the PSP Slim & Lite.[2][3] The new PSP is 33% lighter (reduced to 189 grams from 280 grams) and 19% slimmer than the original PSP system. The model numbers have changed to PSP-2000, following the previous region-based numbering scheme (cf. the PSP-1000 numbering scheme of the "old" PSP model).

Features & advantages over the original PSP

A list of new features is as follows which are included in the Slim:

  • Better Wi-Fi connection.
  • Faster loading times by storing UMD data in temporary memory.
  • Internal memory (RAM and FlashROM) increase from 32 MB to 64 MB.
  • Smaller capacity battery (1200 mAh), but also lower power consumption, and battery recharge over the USB data connection. The old, higher-capacity PSP battery (1800 mAh) will still be compatible and using it will give an increased battery life. However, the battery cover will not fit over the old battery due to the larger size, but a larger battery cover will be sold in retail outlets following the release of the new model.
  • Weight has been reduced by 33% and design is 19% slimmer in thickness (Mainly because the battery cover 'bubbles' hae been taken away)
  • New enamel coating finish
  • A video-out port for displaying on a TV.
  • Slightly lifted d-pad[4] and buttons for improved responsiveness, confirmed in the GameSpot "hands-on" review: "several GameSpot editors have noticed that the d-pad and buttons on the new PSP provide a little more tactile feedback for a better overall feel."[5]
  • Wi-Fi switch moved to the top of the console.
  • New UMD loading tray design.
  • Removal of the infra-red port.
  • Speakers repositioned on the front of the PSP near the top of the screen.
  • Memory Stick slot has been relocated to the upper left.
  • Looser analog stick for better and friendlier control.

Disadvantages

  • Slightly smaller battery length, eg. 3-5 hours
  • Recharging now takes 2 hours 50 minutes as in the manual on a fully depleted battery
  • USB charge is 5 hours
  • Enamel coating on the rear is prone to greasy hands, unlike the matte finish on the previous console
  • The old PlayStation Portable headset adapter will not work on the Slim model because of the new TV-Out slot. This is the reasoning behind a rerelease of the adapter by Sony.

Nevertheless, it is still an improvement of what was previously offered in the original PSP

Features in detail

UMD tray, Wi-Fi & Speakers

The UMD tray design has been changed from an automatic popout induced by the flick of a button to a design were it is easily prised open with the finger. It also opens out twice as much than the previous model.

The old Wi-Fi switch was located at the bottom left of the PSP, it is now located at the top of the new model to stop people accidentally switching it while in a game.

While the speakers on the original console were located south of the main display screen, speakers on the new console have been moved north to "Combat poor sound quality", according to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

Pricing and hardware

The announced price is set at $169.99 for the Core Pack and $199.99 for the newer PSP entertainment packages. The original version of the PSP is also set to be priced at $169.99, until they are sold out, although some stores may lower the price as a clearout sale to try and sell all of their PSP systems more rapidly. The PSP Slim will sell for EUR 169.99, and the two special limited edition ones cost EUR 199.99, in New Zealand the PSP Slim retails for a price of NZ$299. Production of the original PSP has already halted, and since the new design was released, the older design has sold out.

Colors and limited editions

The initial North American PSP release will include the colors Piano Black and Ice Silver. The Piano Black version is currently set to be priced at $169.99. The Ice Silver PSP will come in an entertainment packet including the game Daxter, a 1 GB Memory Stick, and the UMD movie, Family Guy Freakin' Sweet Collection. About one month later, Sony plans to release a special Ceramic White Star Wars edition PSP which has a silkscreen picture of Darth Vader on the back. It will come with the game Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron. Both the Ice Silver and Ceramic White PSPs are set to be priced at $199.99. Sony will release the colors Rose Pink, Lavender Purple, and Felicia Blue in Japan at launch. A special "FINAL FANTASY VII 10th Anniversary" Edition will be released a week before launch, limited to 77,777 units. The package includes a silver color unit with Final Fantasy pictures at the back, an original Final Fantasy sword-shaped strap. (Some shops will also provide a special ear-phone for pre-orders)[6] [7]

Release(d) dates are as follow:

TV output

PSP XMB on TV via output adapter.

Sony has added a TV output for the PSP Slim available through Firmware 3.60. The PSP can output standard resolution (4:3), and widescreen (16:9). It also offers a screensaver if the PSP is inactive for a set amount of time. It is able to output games, videos, and other media. The component or D-link cable is needed for viewing games on a TV (Progressive Scan Enabled TV only). To achieve TV-Out on the Slim model, cables including Component, Composite, S-Video, and D-Terminal are sold separately by Sony. The release date for the cables is to be determined. The maximum resolution through TV-Out is 640x480 pixels.

Homebrew

Previous downgraders, homebrew enablers, and other exploits will not be able to run on the new PSP's Firmware which is 3.60[9]. Tests found out that "Pandora's Battery" exploit is incompatible[10] as well as the Undiluted Platinum modification chip which will not be able to be installed because of the new motherboard layout.

After a weeks of experimenting with firmware 3.60 in Hong Kong, they finally found a hack to downgrade the PSP Slim and Lite's motherboard.[citation needed] This new chip for the hack should be able to transport to North America in the next few weeks.

Custom firmware 3.60 M33 was released on September 10, 2007 for the PSP Slim by Team M33. 3.60 M33 for PSP Slim has all the features of 3.52 M33, except the 1.50 kernel support, as that kernel doesn’t work properly on PSP Slim (hardware problems, screen problems). 3.60 M33 will load homebrew from GAME, GAME150 and GAME360 directories, but all will be executed with 3.60 kernel. This mean that some homebrew done specifically for the 1.50 kernel cannot work on 3.60 M33. However, the adaptation of code to 2.XX+ kernels is not difficult, and homebrew developers can port their applications to work in these firmwares.

PSP Firmware version 3.60 is now obsolete and is only a version shipped with the Slim model. On September 12, PSP firmware 3.71 was released for both Slim and Original.
