History

The University of Texas at Tyler was originally founded in 1971 as Tyler State College. It was renamed Texas Eastern College in 1975, and then joined the University of Texas System in 1979. UT Tyler was initially an upper level university, teaching only upper division undergraduate and graduate level classes. In 1997, with the addition of lower division classes, UT Tyler became a full four-year university. It is the only UT System campus serving the East Texas region.[1]
