Early life
He was a monk at St Augustine's, Canterbury before being selected as abbot of that monastic house.
Archbishop of Canterbury
He was elected and consecrated Archbishop of Canterbury in 765.[1]
His term saw a dispute between the See of Canterbury and King Offa of Mercia leading to the creation of the rival Archdiocese of Lichfield in 787 under Higbert. Jaenbert did not oppose the ratification of this by Pope Hadrian I.[2] But, Pope Leo III reversed the decision in the time of Jaenbert's successor, on the theory that the English episcopate's unanimity in support of the elevation of Lichfield was misrepresented to Hadrian.[3]
Death and veneration
Jaenbert died in 792, possibly on the 12 May.[1] He has since been revered as a saint. His feast day is 12 August.[4]
