History
As the 1970's concluded, the two existing Kent high schools (Kentridge and Kent-Meridian) were overcrowded, so a third needed to be built. Dr. George Wilson was chosen to be the principal of the new school.
A planning committee of parents, students and teachers formed to discuss a name and school colors, where the only stipulation was a law that stated the school must have "Kent" as either a prefix or suffix. Using Kent, England and its history as a theme, the new school was named "Kentwood". They decide to use "Conquerors" as the team name signifying William the Conqueror's strength, determination and excellence. The school was built in a section unincorporated King County with Kent as the mailing address, but in 1997 the area became the city of Covington.
The annual was named the "Tapestry" to preserve memories of school just as the Bayeaux Tapestry preserved the memory of the Battle of Hastings. The committee decided that Kentwood would have three school colors- black, green, and silver- instead of the usual two found throughout the Northwest (a fourth color, white, was added at the 2007 Kentwood constitution amendment meeting). Green was chosen to symbolize the rolling fields of Kent, England, and black and silver represent William the Conqueror's suit of armor. A coat of arms was drawn up to be the school symbol, a copy of an eleventh century knight's battle green. The "K" in the middle of the shield is a replica of the "K" in the Norman alphabet[2].
Originally holding grades 10-12, Kentwood and the other for Kent High Schools added 9th graders in 2005 to relieve the overcrowding in the district's Jr. High Schools at that time. A new building was added to hold the influx of new students.
Academics
Kentwood offers Advanced Placement classes in US History, Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Art, Computer Science, Literature, Statistics, Calculus (AB), Music Theory, Biology, Chemistry, and Psychology. It should be noted that these classes are only available if enough students sign up for them.
