Hauts-de-Seine is part of the petite couronne, a ring of three départements around Paris (with Seine Saint-Denis and Val de Marne).

It is small and densely populated and contains the modern office, theatre, and shopping complex known as La Défense with its Grande Arche. It was largely part of the Seine département until 1968.
