RE:DYK thx

Thanks a lot! But maybe some Admin should remove the word (pictured) from the hook, because it has been published without picture... ;-) Thanks again, Alex2006 (talk) 15:14, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Frauenfriedenskirche

Thanks. It's an odd building, isn't it? I'm a bit disappointed that my updated translation of Brick Expressionism didn't make it to DYK, as it's one of my current favourites. Wp seems fairly poor on European modern architecture, so far... athinaios | Talk 15:52, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK on a Waffle

Thanks again for the recent updates. I addition to writing hooks for my new articles, I have truly enjoyed rummaging through the list of bot-detected new articles and writing hooks for articles that deserve the additional attention they get from appearing on the main page. Thanks to you for all of your contributions and for the janitorial responsibilities of selecting and posting DYK items. Alansohn (talk) 16:31, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your welcome Alan .... although it is a number of peoplw who make DYK work .... you can select other peoples hooks for next update... admins are requireed only to do the copy to the main page you joust need to make sure the hooks and articles are ok by dyk and wiki rules. Nomming is good as it thrills editors who think no one has read their article Victuallers (talk) 16:40, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I had started rummaging through the bot-listed articles and I was amazed at how many really good articles are being created for which a truly-worthwhile to read hook could be written. It astounds me how many have made it through to the DYK box on the main page. I still make a mistake now and then, but now that I think that I understand the rules, I check the article size, make sure that the hook is reliably sourced, verify the length of the hook and add it in, with very few errors detected by your fellow DYK crew. Thanks again! Alansohn (talk) 16:50, 14 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

New Question - Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Victuallers

Question about Victoriatown

I have done a major overhaul of the above article. I'm wondering if you could take a look at it, and see if I've expanded it enough to qualify for a 19 January nomination as an expansion at DYK? -- Bellwether BC 04:06, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

  • I can't do it until much later today (early tomorrow UTC), as I have a birthday thing for my nephew (five years old today!) that will last all day. If you have time to work on it, that would be great, but if not, I'll take a look when I get home this evening. Thanks, and best regards, -- Bellwether BC 13:58, 20 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • Why did you remove the book cover image? I think that the fact that an award-winning novel was set in Goose Village is important, and the book cover is used in the "In popular culture" section to illustrate the importance of the book being set in the village. -- Bellwether BC 03:43, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
  • While I don't necessarily agree with the article being too "image heavy", in retrospect, I can see how the book cover might make it feel a bit cluttered. As for the bus driver information, it's included in the "history" section, is referenced, and illuminates the human past of the town. This was my reasoning in putting it in the article. Were you just feeling like it felt dropped in or something? I don't think it's absolutely essential for the article, but I like the information in the article for the "human past" reason I mentioned above. Can you think of maybe a better place to include it in the article? -- Bellwether BC 15:51, 21 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

  1. Remember you will always protect the wrong version.
  2. Remember you must always follow the rules, except for when you ignore them. You will always pick the wrong one to do. (See #5)
  3. Remember to assume good faith and not bite. Remember that when you are applying these principles most diligently, you are probably dealing with a troll.
  4. Use the block ability sparingly. Enjoy the insults you receive when you do block.
  5. Remember when you make these errors, someone will be more than happy to point them out to you in dazzling clarity and descriptive terminology.
  6. and finally, Remember to contact me if you ever need assistance, and I will do what I am able.

Sydney Girls High School references

Hi there. I agree that we should make articles look as good as possible, but unreferenced and refimprove tags aren't intended only to inform readers that there are not any/enough references. Adding these tags to an article adds that page to a category showing that it needs additional references, and it helps other users to know which articles need work on references. For more details, see here, here or here. For now, I'll put the refimprove tag back on the article. Feel free to contact me on my talk page. Cheers, Cdlw93 (talk) 21:46, 23 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Salisbury Cathedral School

I haven't got time to work on this one at the moment but it is a newly created article on a very old and interesting school and a prime candidate for DYK if some more content and a few references could be found. DYK... that Salisbury Cathedral School, founded in 1091 by St Osmund, is one of the oldest schools in the world? Or ...that Salisbury Cathedral School has two world-famous cathedral choirs? DYK

Sure, First you have to download the image onto wikipedia. I am doing that just now. Woody (talk) 12:28, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yep basically. What I did was, save the file to my computer, copy the licensing info from commons and then upload it to exactly the same file name. I then add {{C-uploaded}} to it. Then you are ready to go. Woody (talk) 12:32, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thx. OK I looked at the image you loaded and its protection. Do you just copy it onto the template?

How do you mean? Now that it is on wikipedia, it is protected due to the cascading protection. The template is just added to the summary. In terms of the DYK template, you simply copy the next update over onto the main DYK template. Then you have to update the Template:Did you know/Next update/Time. All done now Woody (talk) 12:39, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not much more, just blank the next update with a clean version from Template:Did you know/Next update/Clear. Then all you have to do is give out the credits and you are done. Woody (talk) 12:44, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
No problem, (and remember to blank the credit list when you have finshed. ;) If you have any more questions, just ask! Woody (talk) 12:55, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I wasn't around at that time. It was fairly early in the morning here & I was catching up on sleep after doing a marathon 51 hour trivia contest this past weekend. I'm glad to see that Woody showed you the process! Royalbroil 14:36, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Re: dyk

Hello Victuallers. No, I wouldn't call myself an "Imagemap Fan" - I just needed to use it for the archives (on the top of my talk page near the TOC). Also, do you get one of those DYK awards if you expanded (a good amount) of an article that was then featured on DYK the next day? - Milk's Favorite Cookie 20:02, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

BTW - Congrats on becoming an admin! - I recall voting 'support' on you RFA :) - Milk's Favorite Cookie 20:04, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hmm.. I guess I could call myself an Imagemap fan. Why do you ask?   jj137 (talk) 20:39, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Actually, no, I don't have a gallery (although I probably could/should create one). I'm not sure what you mean by protecting the code with a template, though.   jj137 (talk) 20:50, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I'm still confused by what you mean.   jj137 (talk) 22:12, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, I see what you mean now. As for protection, I'm not sure; if it starts to receive vandalism/non-constructive edits, we probably could protect it, but I think it's fine for now. About imagemaps: honestly, I'm not that good at making them that I could make one like that; I know how, but I keep making mistakes. The most recent one I can think of is an extremely simple one [2] (obviously not even much, but it's the first one I thought of).   jj137 (talk) 22:31, 29 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for telling me about that tool; I had no idea it existed, and it was very helpful. Wow.   jj137 (talk) 03:06, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Confused (Dukes of Normandy)

Victuallers, thanks for your note, which has prompted me to look at the numbering of the articles we have on Dukes Robert of Normandy... Our article Robert II, Duke of Normandy is plainly about the Duke usually called Robert I, or Robert the Devil, or Robert the Magnificent, and not about the Duke usually called Robert II of Normandy, who is his grandson and has an article at Robert Curthose. In the lead of that article, Robert Curthose is introduced as Robert II. We can see why he is sailing under the name of Curthose. I tried to move Robert II, Duke of Normandy to Robert I, Duke of Normandy, but it can't be done except by an Admin, perhaps because there's already a page at Robert I, Duke of Normandy, which redirects to Rollo of Normandy. At Rollo of Normandy we read that some sources call him Robert, but so far as I'm aware he isn't known as Robert I, Duke of Normandy. I'll copy this note to Clio, who may be able to say if I'm missing something before we ask you to Do Something. regards, Xn4 01:06, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, you are quite right, Xn4, there is some confusion here. I have never come across any source that refers to Rollo as Robert. Besides, it is uncertain if he was ever known by the title of Duke of Normandy. Robert the Magnificent, father of William the Conqueror, is thus generally recognised as Robert I, which makes Robert Curthose, or Courte-Heuse, his grandson, the second duke of that name. In fact you will find them with the proper numerical identity if you look at the genealogy on the page for Robert the Magnificent, and at the list on the Wikipedia page on the Dukes of Normandy. I was under the impression that title changes could be made by any editor? Anyway, I'm copying this note to your talk page and that of Victuallers. Best wishes to you both. Clio the Muse (talk) 23:10, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, Clio.
Victuallers, I don't entirely understand why I need to trouble an Admin for these moves, but -
  1. would you please consider moving Robert II, Duke of Normandy to Robert I, Duke of Normandy?
  2. That move will create a new redirect page called Robert II, Duke of Normandy, redirecting to Robert I, Duke of Normandy, but could Robert Curthose please be moved to Robert II, Duke of Normandy, nevertheless?
  3. Robert the Magnificent should then be redirected to Robert I, Duke of Normandy instead of to Robert II, Duke of Normandy
Many thanks. Xn4 01:28, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
I was able to sort this out, with some redirecting of redirects before I tried again to move the articles which wouldn't move. In the event, I've moved the article on Robert I to Robert the Magnificent, with a redirect to there from Robert I, Duke of Normandy, and I've left Robert II at Robert Curthose, with Robert II, Duke of Normandy redirecting to him. I've also done some consequential tidying up of wikilinks and redirects. Xn4 12:31, 6 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Ok. I see you're a relatively new admin. Take this as a learning experience, then. WP:CSD#A7 applies only to articles that don't even make any claim to significance or importance, and that don't have clear evidence of notability. It's best to avoid deleting any marginal cases, and especially don't delete ones that are sourced under A7, because sourcing presumably asserts that the subject meets WP:N. Don't worry about it, though, we all make mistakes and have to learn the ropes one way or another. Mangojuicetalk 19:09, 2 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Clicky maps

Hi Victuallers, I was wondering how you do the clicky maps? Is there a help page somewhere on the technique? I was thinking it would be nifty to add clickiness to the range map at a recent featured article on which I worked, Sumatran Rhinoceros. Each of the little red spots is a different national park, and I was hoping if one dragged their mouse over the park it would identify which one it was. Is that possible and, if so, can you show me how it's done? Thanks greatly! --JayHenry (talk) 01:22, 5 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK Help...

Hi Victuallers,

Any chance I can finally have a go at this DYK? Perhaps I could do Tramcars of the National Tramway Museum instead?

In theory, all I have to do is make it 5(?) times bigger than it is - presumably this can be done with Tramcar notes, as well as further explanations about Tramcars in general?

Oh and well done on the DYK - I forgot to vote... :$!

Oh and i returned after solving the dispute! :D!

I'll copy it into the same box the other DYK is in - Box 4. Please let me know how i'm doing!
Does it matter if all (or most of) the refs go to the same place? (The guidebook/British Trams Online/LCCTT/Official Site)?
More pics will follow - I have one of nearly every tram!
So the text should be the intro and then the bits about the cars? How big is a factor of five would you say?

Encore Computer speedy - please restore

Hi, Looking for info on Encore Computer today, I was surprised to discover that there wasn't an article -- it had been recently speedied for non-notability. This is surprising because the company is definitely notable; on the other hand, not surprising since, looking at the cached article on Google, no one had ever bothered to add references...

Anyhow, I'd like to go ahead and edit the article to establish notability; would you be able to restore it to bring back the edit trail and such?

As a notability placeholder for now, please see:

I'll of course get this or similar info more formally wrapped into the article once it's back up, but this should be enough to at least move it from "speedy" to AfD consideration. Thanks, NapoliRoma (talk) 22:20, 12 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Peer review??

I'm wondering if you would be interested in doing a peer review on an article for me. I think it's close to GA and I would like a non-American who's not a racing fan to review it to weed out the American racing biases. I will review one of your articles in exchange for your review. What do you think? I'm watching your talk page, so you can respond here. Royalbroil 05:04, 15 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

So what do you think? Feel free to turn me down if you don't plan to work on any GA/FA articles. Royalbroil 12:38, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Tell me the article RB and I'll see if I can help ... obviously I'd like too Victuallers (talk) 12:46, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

The article is Alan Kulwicki, and I want to propose GA. Would you start of list on the article's talk page of things that should be added to make things clearer to a non-American who's not a racing fan? Especially background things like explaining, say, the 1970s stock car scene in America. Let me know which article to review or save the credit for future use. Thanks! Royalbroil 13:13, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I'm curious if you were planning on continuing the peer review. Your peer review so far has been extremely helpful and is appreciated. Royalbroil 22:20, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I want to propose the article at GA. Would you hold off with the rest of your review until after it's done with the GA process? Royalbroil 13:40, 2 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK nom

Hi there, I was wondering why my Shiv Chowrasia nomination was withdrawn by you in the Next Update? Thanks, Mspraveen (talk) 11:45, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi there Victuallers, there was nothing wrong with Mspraveen's hook, I approved it myself. I think you misread the text on the suggestions page, Mspraveen just withdrew one hook when he realized an article on the topic already existed, but then he just copied his new content onto the existing article and got a x5 expansion. So I believe his hook was legitimate. Gatoclass (talk) 13:20, 16 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sparrenburg Castle DYK

Hello and thank you for the nomination of the Sparrenburg Castle article. I have to mention that I am just the translator of the German article. Another important thing is that–as I understand–the right name for the castle is either "Sparrenburg" or "Sparrenberg Castle" because "Burg" already means "castle" and the hill on which it is situated has the name "Sparrenberg". Maybe we should move it to the right name first. Kind regards, Tirkfltalk 08:03, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I moved it to Sparrenberg Castle and already changed the two articles linking to the redirect page. If the translation is considered to be okay I don't have a problem with featuring it at the DYK. Kind regards, Tirkfltalk 08:42, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Secondary education in the Borough of Halton

Glad you like this way of dealing with schools which are not necessarily "notable", yet (in my opinion) still have a place in Wikipedia, and especially as part of the Wikipedia:WikiProject Cheshire. I was "driven" to this by the addition of a "should be merged with Runcorn" tag attached to one school (which is not a good idea). It took a bit of time but I am quite pleased with the outcome and it may be a sensible model for dealing with schools in other areas. If any particular school is "notable", a separate article could be written about it with a {{main}} tag in the general article. Thanks for adding the links to the redirect pages. I had sort of thought about doing this but had not got round to it. I'm intrigued though why the titles on the Categories page should be in italics - presumably to show that this will take you through a redirect page. Peter I. Vardy (talk) 12:58, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Various NTM Tramcar Stuff...

Hi Victuallers...

I will be at Crich on Sunday - are there any pics that you can think we might need (I dunno, one of the depot perhaps?)

Also, could possible alternative hooks be some things from the "trivia" section (it will be gone SOON!!! I've reffed one more part, which I will incorporate 2moz... (about London 1622!). Blackpool 166, Prague 180 and Jo'berg 60 should be the next ones up!)? For example: Of all the Tramcars of the National Tramway Museum, Prague 180 has had more press coverage than the rest put together!?

Thanks,

BG7 20:52, 19 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think a different hook is probably preferential - there are actually on 13 operational tramcars, as Leeds 180 was withdrawn with electrical problems yesterday. It needs a body lift and a complete rebuild of the resistance box - a big job, and there isn't space for a body lift at the moment in the workshop!
No worries about pics! I'll upload those I have to commons later on. Online hook... I guess that means it has to be on a site. If it came from a guidebook, and I copy it to my site, does that count?
Thanks,

Mystery

Hi. Any thoughts on this oddity which seems to be a problem with a whole lot of artists? For an example, at François de Troy, on the left of my screen, I can see eight interwiki links, two of them apparently to the French Wikipedia. The last three of the eight (including one French) are real, can be found embedded in the text of the article and lead to real articles elsewhere, but the first five (including the other French) are ghosts which lead only to templates. It's much the same at another article I recently started, Alexis Simon Belle. I can't find anything to show what's causing this ghosting, but the problem seems to be something to do with other wikipedias whith have interwiki links from Template:Infobox Artist. All's well today, your changes clearly did fix the problem, so many thanks! The culprit is SashatoBot. At this edit, the bot added interwikis to Template:Infobox Artist outside the <noinclude> tags, causing ghost interwiki links on all pages which used the template, as discussed above and here. And the links were already included in the template's documentation. On the bot's User Page, I see the message "Administrators: if this bot is malfunctioning or causing harm, please block it. Would you please consider doing that, until its owner, Sasa Stefanovic, has got it under better control? Thanks again. Xn4 16:00, 22 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK – Rodger Wylde

Hi, the above article has so far been overlooked for DYK. Any chance of getting it in the next update before the nom expires? I don't want to move it across myself as the nomintor, but it's a nice article and well referenced, so should pass the criteria easily. Cheers, Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 20:37, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for adding this to the next update. I have slightly expanded the hook again as the shortened hook was inaccurate. It's still shorter than the original hook though, and well under 200 characters. Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 22:27, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
The Stockport player is important because it is his broken leg that was being treated by Rodger as the club physio. The two spent a lot of time together and ended up deciding to form a band. I think that it's important that this part is left in as it adds to the "interestingness" of the hook (in my opinion anyway). Dan1980 (talk | stalk) 22:39, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I only just got your message about adding the other hooks. I was doing a major expansion of an article and didn't get the new message box for some reason. I would normally have put the other hooks in to the template, but I didn't want to get sidetracked from the major edit that I was in the middle of. 1917 Pinar del Río hurricane

Hello. I noticed that a portion of the article has been featured in the "Did you know?" department. Unfortunately, it incorrectly states that the cyclone was 949 mbar at landfall in Cuba. The minimum pressure of 928 mbar (27.42 inHg) was the actual reading in Cuba. I clarified that fact in the article. The 949 mbar reading is estimated for the Florida landfall. Can you correct 949 mbar to 928 mbar in the DYK? Thanks! CVW (Talk) 21:44, 3 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

James Bert Garner DYK hook

Your nomination for him struck me hard that James Garner invented the gasmask?. There's a famous American actor named James Garner, which you inadvertently hit, and it caused me to laugh. It caused me to think about using the hook and especially the image for the April Fool's DYK! Would you object with saving the DYK nom for 1 April, and then spicing it up a lot? Americans would really appreciate knowing that a famous actor sent two of his associates into chlorine gas filled room, especially with a picture to prove it! Royalbroil 02:41, 11 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have moved your suggestion there (to Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Did You Know) and struck it from the current DYK suggestions. I would appreciate your help there: we need some more noms by April Fool's Day.
A bigger concern is the Featured Article because that takes lots of time. Last year someone came forward with a rushed FA starting on March 25th, so anything's possible. All FA only get featured once, so one needs to be done before that day. There aren't any good nominees at this time, although I just suggested a spoof using the delisted GA Garbage (band). Discussion is found at Wikipedia:April Fool's Main Page/Featured Article. There are 2 or 3 appropriate Featured Pictures to decide from, so that is not a concern.
GA nominations normally take several weeks, so the Alan Kulwicki article is holding for now. I'll like you to wait with finishing your review until after GA review has been completed. Royalbroil 02:07, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

You mean Clem Rutter's notification was missed?
Hmm, had to go back through the history to see what happened. What happened is that basically DarkFalls did all the notifications, but he didn't clear the page and I wanted to start the next update. So I clicked through a selection of the links to ensure he'd done them all, and as he'd done every link I looked at, top, middle, and bottom of both the article and the creator/nominator columns, I assumed he must have done the lot and I cleared the page. But I guess he must have overlooked one, so my methodology of logical selective checking was foiled :/ Gatoclass (talk) 16:39, 12 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Emancipation Proclamation draft error

Seward and Smith are misidentified/mislinked in the image. Seward is seated but is identified as Smith. Smith is identified as Seward, and both link to Smith when clicked. It's a neat piece of work, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Red Harvest (talk) 14:23, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

on DYK

Yup, I doubt we'll find 24. Even if the updates are 8 hours apart I don't think we have 18-20. I'll try to find an Irish-born baseball player to expand, but virtually all of them are pre-1900, making sources hard to find. I'll try though since we could use some more. Vic, didn't you read my edit summaries? I hadn't finished organizing that update. I just finished, and I turned around to find you posted it ten minutes ago! Gatoclass (talk) 16:54, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I'd really appreciate that if you'd repost the updated version. There are not too many hooks on my monitor, the last one fits perfectly, but I'll leave that up to you whether you want to include it or not, I thought it was a nice quirky one to finish off with. Just before I go, I can see a couple of minor tweaks might be in order. The last hook contains the word "actually" which is superfluous. You might want to remove that. The second last also says "showed openly" when it probably should be "openly showed" for grammatical correctness. Anyhow I'll leave it up to you if you want to fix them or not. Gatoclass (talk) 15:50, 19 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

DYK Image

Did you upload and protect the image? I don't see {{C-uploaded}}. --BorgQueen (talk) 16:16, 19 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

What happened is that you uploaded it with the default extension, which is .jpg . The actual extension should have been (capital) .JPG . Luckily no one vandalized the image on Commons. I took care of it. I always click on the image before loading (in the "Next Update") to make sure that the capitalization issue doesn't come up. Luckily Victuallers page is on my watchlist. Royalbroil 17:43, 19 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
I would appreciate it if you would watch my back too! I am not perfect either. Besides some DYK updates (although I did 4 or 5 straight DYK updates on Christmas) I occasionally do some speedy deletes that are real bad (attack, zero notability, and ones with no content or context). I tend more inclusionist, so I pass over most speedy nominations and remove some nominations that I think don't meet speedy criteria. I found an awesome source for the 50 best drag racers in the U.S. and I'm able to write B-class type articles just from that source! (I do add other sources of course.) Big name drag racers had tiny stub articles, and many had none. I'm also been working on getting the Alan Kulwicki article up to GA level. The completion of your review will be appreciated after it is a GA. Many people have already reviewed it, so I'll propose it for FA after you look at it, as long as there aren't any major concerns raised by you or the GA reviewer. Just browsing through the Scottish noms, seeing most of 'em are mine just now. Is it frowned up for self-nominators to drop their own noms into next update? BTW, the Bernard nom is particularly appropriate because Tartan Day commemorates the Declaration of Arbroath, of which Bernard is supposedly the author (in popular writings, though actual historians these days don't believe that).
