Re: Need a simple bot

I saw your request for a simple bot. Have you ever used pywikipedia framework? --AllyUnion (talk) 04:07, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

It's very easy to set up if you can install Python. Do you use Windows or Linux? --AllyUnion (talk) 04:13, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
Update it directly from CVS. --AllyUnion (talk) 04:24, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
I'm in #wikipedia on IRC if you like to message me. CVS. --AllyUnion (talk) 04:32, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
In Linux, you will want to run the CVS command that is on the pywikipedia bot framework page:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pywikipediabot login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/pywikipediabot co pywikipedia
See: [1] --AllyUnion (talk) 04:45, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
You'll want this one: 08/25/2005 --AllyUnion (talk) 05:13, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
Unzip the files, install python, copy the config.py to user-config.py, edit user-config.py to modify the settings to:
# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-
############## ACCOUNT SETTINGS ##############

# The family of sites we are working on. wikipedia.py will import
# families/xxx_family.py so if you want to change this variable,
# you need to write such a file.
family = 'wikipedia'
# The language code of the site we're working on.
mylang = 'en'

# The dictionary usernames should contain a username for each site where you
# have a bot account. Please set your usernames by adding such lines to your
# user-config.py:
#
# usernames['wikipedia']['de'] = 'myGermanUsername'
# usernames['wiktionary']['en'] = 'myEnglishUsername'
#
#usernames = {}

usernames['wikipedia']['en'] = 'USERNAME_HERE'
############## USER INTERFACE SETTINGS ##############

# the encoding that's used in the user's console, i.e. how strings are encoded
# when they are read by raw_input(). On Windows systems' DOS box, this should
# be 'cp850' ('cp437' for older versions). Linux users might try 'iso-8859-1'
# or 'utf-8'. If this variable is set to None, the default is 'cp850' on
# windows, and iso-8859-1 on other systems
console_encoding = None

# tkinter isn't yet ready
userinterface = 'terminal'

# Should the system bell be ringed if the bot expects user input?
ring_bell = False

Also, I made small modifications to wikipedia.py in order to get mine working: In the file wikipedia.py:

def output(text, decoder = None, colors = [], newline = True):
    """
    Works like print, but uses the encoding used by the user's console
    (console_encoding in the configuration file) instead of ASCII.
    If decoder is None, text should be a unicode string. Otherwise it
    should be encoded in the given encoding.

    colors is a list of integers, one for each character of text. If a
    list entry is None, the default color will be used for the
    character at that position.

    If newline is True, a linebreak will be added after printing the text.
    """
    if decoder:
        text = unicode(text, decoder)
    elif type(text) != type(u''):
        print "DBG> BUG: Non-unicode passed to wikipedia.output without decoder!"
        print traceback.print_stack()
        print "DBG> Attempting to recover, but please report this problem"
        try:
            text = unicode(text, 'utf-8')
        except UnicodeDecodeError:
            text = unicode(text, 'iso8859-1')
    if logfile:
        # save the text in a logfile (will be written in utf-8)
        logfile.write(text + '\n')
        logfile.flush()
#    ui.output(text, colors = colors, newline = newline)
    print text

#def input(question):
#    return ui.input(question)

#def inputChoice(question, answers, hotkeys, default = None):
# return ui.inputChoice(question, answers, hotkeys, default)

Your script would be something like this:

f = file('something.csv')
text = f.readlines()
for line in text:
    items = line.replace('\n','').split(',')
    name = items[0]
    state = items[1]
    population = items[2]
    area = items[3]
    newtext = name + " is a district in " + state + " with a population of " + population + " and an area of " + area
    wikipedia.Page(wikipedia.getSite(), 'User:Nichlap/Sandbox').put(newtext)

Or something like that. Read the file. Good luck. --AllyUnion (talk) 05:38, 8 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Replace 'USERNAME_HERE' with 'Nichalp' but if you plan to use a bot, you should sign up an account separate from your username. --AllyUnion (talk) 16:09, 9 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Also your custom script is a separate file. You will call the modules by importing. See the Python documentation here for more info. --AllyUnion (talk) 06:27, 10 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

No, you put that into a new file, the f = file('something.csv') (etc) and make a python program. --AllyUnion (talk) 18:54, 10 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

More help

Some python basics:

import module_name - This imports a module or file into your program, same as #include in C++

Calling functions from this module would be module.function_name

You can read more at www.python.org where they have a tutorial. The main modules you will be calling are: wikipedia and config

You'll be calling your programs by the following:
python <filename>.py

You will not have to do this if you are calling the python interpreter by a shbang.

The extensions for python are typically .py
.pyc files are compiled versions of the .py that the program is using.

In order for your bot to log in, you have to call (only once every so month... maybe):
python login.py

In a clean, separate file, you need at the top:

# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-

import wikipedia, config

In order to create a Page object in which you will use to get and put pages, you have to something like this:

mypage = wikipedia.Page(wikipedia.getSite(), 'User talk:Cool Cat')

That creates a page object linked to your talk page in the above example.

To get the wiki text from the page, you'd call (following from the previous example):

mypage.get()

You can save that data into a variable if you wish. To put a page you do something like this:

mypage.put('New text to replace old text', 'Fill out the comment field in this field.')

Where "New text" is where you want to replace the existing text, and the second portion is the comment note in the history. Default is something like: "Wikipedia python library"

If you want to add to the text, do something like this:

mypage.put(mypage.get() + 'Added text here', 'Bot adding text')

That is all you should need to program your script in Python and get your bot working. I don't believe you need any other function. The code I gave you above is an outline for your program for you to use. If you have any further questions, please don't hestitate to leave me a message. --AllyUnion (talk) 20:01, 16 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Bhutan

I do think the introduction should be at least re-ordered. A reader should not have to sit through a longish discussion (interesting or not) on etymology before finding out basic info about the country. Tlogmer 11:27, 10 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

No probs. My kannada was slightly rusty, so creating tiny stubs are a good practice. Nepal map

Funny that you ask: because the Bhutan map made me think about creating a Nepal map too, and yesterday I have already uploaded Image:Nepal_topo_en.jpg (it's linked in the geography article, not the main article). Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are quite small, so resolution becomes a problem, I will see... --Captain Blood 18:56, 10 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Updated analysis of length of Schiavo + note on Fair Use.

I posted this in FA-review talk, but here's a copy on your talk:

  • New info (ATTN: Nichalp) re Article Length: I just saved the Terri Schiavo page in *.txt format on my computer: My computer says that it is "69.7 KB (71,438 bytes)." which is accurate. Wikipedia claims says of "Talk" page that: "This page is 119 kilobytes long," so are my computer's numbers are accurate?? My computer says the "Talk" page "117 KB (120,015 bytes)," so my computer is telling the truth about the article page too, I believe. (PS" I saved the talk and article pages in HTML format, but I shall not discuss those figures, as they are not accurate.) So, in conclusion, since I can't pull up the edit dialogue and get "wikipedia's" assessment, we will have to guess that my computer is accurate: Terri Schiavo is larger than 55Kb or 65Kb, yes, but it is not 80Kb; it is more like 70Kb, references and all, FYI. Look at it yourself and see if I've read right, please. Thx.--GordonWattsDotCom 19:20, 10 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

PS: Today's FA used a Fair Use image, so concerns about Terri were premature, but Carnildo has some good points; The news is hopping, jumping, and interesting. Come and see: Wikipedia:Featured_article_candidates/Terri_Schiavo --also the Terri "Talk" page needs input so we can come to resolution; We need help there too, lol. --GordonWattsDotCom 19:33, 10 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Test cricket hat-tricks

Hi - I'm afraid that an edit conflict with me finishing the table has blitzed your width fixing. I am rather loath to put your edits back as (i) it breaks the format, and (ii) shortening words even further (Agst In. Tst. Fnl) makes it more difficult to understand. Is your resolution/scrolling problem a "nice to have" or a "must have"? Hindi questions

Hi Nichalp, I'm a true wikiaddict and I am of course struggling to break the addiction :). Actually I have a hindi question for you. In practicing, I have pretty much the whole basic syllabary down, but I can't quite understand all the modifiers. I pulled up the Hindi BBC for practice and I can sound out (slowly) most words even if I don't know what they mean. But a few characters with modifiers have me stumped. Here's the headline and intro blurb:

'आतंकवाद के सामने नहीं झुकेंगे'

भारत के प्रधानमंत्री डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह ने संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा में कहा है कि भारत जम्मू- कश्मीर या कहीं और आतंकवाद के मुद्दे पर कभी नहीं झुकेगा.

Ok, I figured these out once I got home to where I have my keyboard set up to type Hindi. But not the part after these conjuncts or how they are pronounced. The ones that have me baffled are राष्ट्र and मुद्दे. By copying here and backspacing from the end of the word, I can delete the modifiers one by one, but I can't tell what they all are. Peeling back the modifiers looks like this:

  1. राष्ट्र राष्ट् राष्ट राष् राष so I know the base is ष or ssa, so the base word is something like raasha, then the end vowel is removed with a halant, then some other modifier I don't know is there, then the end vowel is supressed again, then the last modifier looks like the ^ conjunct form of ra, but I'm not sure, and I thought that form of ra is only used after retroflex consonants.
    This one is ष + ् + ट + ् + र = ष्ट्र so I guess it is pronouced something like raashthr?
  2. The second one is similar. I see द or da is modified first by surpressing the vowel then one modification I don't think I've ever seen.
    Ok this one is the dda special conjunct formed from द + ् + द + a े for the vowel = द्दे. The word must be pronounced something like muudde with the e like a long a sound in english.

Overall the Hindi syllabary is nice since now that I know the character sounds I can nearly pronounce any word I see. The only other problem is that it is not always made clear when the inherent vowel is supressed. If you know the word I guess you would know, but I don't so it is hard. For example this site has been great, but in it's transliteration and pronunciation of animal, it lists it as jaanvar, whereas I would read that script as jaanavar since the half consonant form of न isn't used. That happens a few other places on that page. Is it just convention or a mistake on the page? Any enlightenment would be great. Thanks - Taxman Talk 20:05, 15 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Images

Hi Nicholas, thank you for your note about the map and the Death March image. I really appreciate you making the map of Sighet so that we don't need the permission for the other one any more. As for Image:Wieseldeathmarch.gif, I think it's probably public domain (it's from the United States Holocaust Museum), but because I wasn't certain of that, I put fair use: the rational for that would be that the image has no monetary value, we're using it for educational purposes, and it's readily available from a number of websites. However, I can contact the museum to check that with them. In case it's not PD, what exactly is the name of the free licence I should ask them about, and what are the legal implications of it for them?

As for Valentina, no it's not my name; it's just something Zoe made up to annoy me once. ;-) Is she continuing to use it? SlimVirgin (talk) 22:39, 17 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Nepal: history section

I've gone through it, making lots of minor changes and inserting numerous inline comments, which I'm sure you're looking forward to addressing with great excitement.  :-)

Needs referencing, which I realise is not going to be easy; otherwise the reviewers will complain. I don't suppose you know anyone at Tribhuvan University who might be willing to read through the history section, suggesting a few reference citations? I've changed AD and BC to CE (Common Era) and BCE (Before Common Era), to dechristianise the usage; although there are a few christians in Nepal, I think it's appropriate to use this increasingly standard nomenclature, don't you? Do we call them Nepalis or Nepalese?

Are you sure they are being added by bots and not just by users without accounts on this wiki? Bots should never be running anonymously, so it would be fine to block them if that is the only way of contacting them, but I don't know which IPs you mean, so I don't know if they are bots. Angela. 22:40, 19 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

If they're doing anything wrong, then it seems fine to block them, but if they are just correctly adding interlanguage links, then there might not be much need to force them to log in (bots can run without being flagged as bots so long as they're not flooding recent changes). • I am going to USA tomorrow, so was on leave for few days. Once I settle down there, I should be able to continue. As part of preparation, I have scanned the Indian section of the 'Who's who of Test cricketers' and some 300 pages of Mihir Bose's History of Indian Cricket, in addition to two or three smaller books that I'll be taking with me. :-) Tintin 08:47, 20 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

economic stats

Nicholas, I suspect that the figure for government expenditure (a bit over half a billion dollars) is in exchange-rate terms, whereas the GDP and per capita income are PPP. I think the budget should also be expressed in PPP, don't you, otherwise it sounds wrong by comparison? I can find out the factor, I think. Tony

WP:MIND 06:19, 21 September 2005 (UTC)

Hello, Nichalp! This message is to inform you that round three of Wikipedia Mind Benders will open on Wednesday, September 21, at approximately 22:00 UTC. While the opening time may vary by two or three hours, the round will open no earlier than 22:00 UTC. In addition, there are several rule changes, which will be detailed when the round opens. Everyone who answers a question correctly will receive points, but speed does give some extra points! Round three offers 11 new exciting and mind-bogglind questions, written by Deryck C.. These promise to be lots of fun! We sincerely hope you join us.

Also, congratulations to ROYGBIV for winning round two; it was an extremely close game, with the runner-up, Spondoolicks, only two points behind. Let's keep round three competitive! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 22:31, 19 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

I notice you've been trying to talk sense to this user. It saddens me seeing him (or anyone) waste so much energy (his and other people's) that could be used positively here. And sooner or later some less patient admin is going to block him for WP:POINT or some such. Is there anything more that could be done to get him to see sense, do you think? Filiocht | The kettle's on 07:56, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

You're probably right; ignoring him's the best thing to do. If he keeps posting polls everywhere, I can see someone banning him for POINT. Filiocht | The kettle's on 08:39, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
I have better things to do with my life, but since people have criticized me for not seeking concensus, I decided to politely seek to ascertain & identify the concensus in Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship and Wikipedia talk:Featured article candidates on points where I would be glad to follow, obey, and comply with the actual concensus.
However, when I do that, I am criticized for politely seeking consensus. I'm damned if I do seek concensus, and I'm definitely damned if I don't. Does someone else see a problem here?--GordonWatts 09:07, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
Gordon, you have not looked for consensus (please learn to spell this word consistently correctly if you are going to spray it all over the place), you have tried to impose votes where none were needed. The fact is, you pretty well saw consensus emerging on your RfA and you did not like it, so you went into lawyer mode to try to change the rules. Fortunately, you are not going to be able to impose your will on the community against the consensus. Take my advice, which is well meant; take a wikibreak, go do those better things with your life, come back after a while with the understanding that you are just one of hundreds, even thousands, of editors here, most of whom are not admins. Otherwise, I fear that you may end up losing the main role any of us have; the ability to edit articles. Now this is the last time I'm going to respond to you. While I do not believe you are a troll, you are engaging in troll-like behaviour and it would be better if the rest of us stop feeding that. Filiocht | The kettle's on 09:21, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
I know we're all busy, but don't limit yourself with promises to not respond (not that you need to) "you did not like it, so you went into lawyer mode to try to change the rules." You misunderstood me. I was not trying to "change" the rules; Rather, I was trying to identify the concensus, whatever it may be, which would define what the rules need to be, and then I was of the hope that it would be easier for me (and others) to follow the rules and policy, once it is clear what it really is: It is currently unclear: Policy says one thing (in both links above) and does another: Here are these links again, since you missed them perhaps, maybe? Wikipedia talk:Requests for adminship]] and Wikipedia talk:Featured article candidates "(please learn to spell this word consistently correctly if you are going to spray it all over the place)" I do misspell words-sometime, I apologize! But this time, my spell check and I see no problem. Oh well. It's no biggie: My post here, however, is one meant in good will.-GordonWatts 09:32, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Mb1000 Requests for adminship

Mind Benders

Unfortunately, due to the universal nature of Wikipedia, it will always be an inconvenient time for someone. Deryck modified the rules to try and overcome the advantage; before, it was only the first person to get the correct answer receives points, but now, everyone who gets the correct answer will receive points. The first and second users to answer correctly, though, will receive a small bonus, if I'm correct (I'll have to check, Deryck modified the rules and point system). Do you have any other proposals or ideas to equalize the competition? I'm always open to suggestions. Thanks! Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 19:17, 21 September 2005 (UTC)Reply
