Jenny Lee Asheridge was a miner's daughter but obtained a degree in Education and Law at Edinburgh University. She entered parliament in 1929 as Member for North Lannark. She married Aneurin Bevan, a Welsh MP in 1934. Harold Wilson won the General Election in 1964 and then Jenny Lee became Minister of Arts. She was one of those who initiated the Open University.
