The phrase negative calorie food is a term used by people who believe that there are certain foods which require more energy to digest than they provide nutritionally. There is no scientific evidence to this claim.
Low nutrient, high cellulose foods such as celery are generally agreed to consume very slightly more energy to digest than they provide nutritionally.[1] These foods may be consumed within a weight-loss diet to potentially relieve the feeling of hunger without contributing to total caloric intake. Limiting a diet to only these foods would result in malnutrition.
