In addition to the new features added to the main game, Subsistence will also contain an online game comprised of five game modes, each with a capacity of at least 8 players, set in the main game's maps, as well as new stages made specifically for online play. The player can choose to join one of the three enemy units appearing in the main game: the KGB, the GRU or the Ocelot unit. The best-ranking player in each team will control the team's leader, represented by a major character from the main game. Players can choose to be Snake, Dr.Sokolov (for the KGB), Raikov (for the GRU) and for the first time in the series, Ocelot. Other hidden characters will also make appearances, including Reiko Hinomoto from Konami's Rumble Roses wrestling series.

  • Sneaking Mission - One player will play as Snake trying to procure an item from the other players, who will try to thwart his attempt. Snake is equipped with 3 camouflages, a wide variety of guns, and stealth camouflage to complete his mission.
  • Team Death Match - Two teams must engage in combat based on a set time limit and the team with the most "life tickets" remaining will be declared the victor. Every time a person respawns, a ticked it subtracted from the overall score. Once the tickets are gone, the team loses.

  • Capture Mission - Two competing teams attempt to capture an item and bring it back to their base. The team holding the item ((The kerotan frog)) must bring it back to their base and hold it their for 20 seconds. If the other team manages to retreive the kerotan, they may bring it back to their own base and protect it themself. First team to hold the Kertoan for 20 seconds wins.
  • Rescue Mission - One team guards a small rubber duck while the other team tries to capture it. Rescue mission is unique in that players do not respawn if killed - instead, they become ghosts. When playing as a ((ghost)) you are only able to move around as if alive, and CQC other ghosts in the field.
  • Weapons - Weapons include the SVD sniper rifle. Mosin nagant tranquilizer sniper rifle. XM16E1 Machine gun. AK 74U machine gun. Shotgun. M1911A1 pistol. MK-22 tranquilizer pistol. And a variety of grenades. Additional weapons such as the M603 heavy machine gun and RPG-7 rocket launcher can be found on certain given levels, in game.

Tips and strategies - There are several things to be aware of when playing ONLINE MODE in MGS 3 subsistence. Here are a few tips to help you out when you first play.

1.Flashbang grenades cannot affect you if you are in a box

2. Auto-aim is sloppy, and for beginners

3.Use teamwork, it is more efficient and allows for more precise notations in battle

4.You can never die with full health from one grenade. If you are afraid of getting blown up, remember you have 2 chances.

5. Rations lie on the field during play, picking these up raises stamina.

6.When you kill/are killed. You focus on the player who killed you. This may give away your position, so don't stay in one spot for too long.

7.If you press and hold the 'triangle' button, your character will do their taunt. Generic soldiers to a salute, as special characters such as Snake, do their individual and special taunts. Snake smokes his cigar, Ocelot his hand gesture, Reiko pulls up her pants, Rowdy Reiko squats down, Raikov salutes, and Sokolov does the whimpery hand gestures when first extracted with Snake in Virtous Mission.

8.If one of your comrades is caught up in a dirty magazine, give him a heavy smack with a PPK combo to loosen him up.

9.Don't be cheap and team kill, your rank will go down siginficantly.

10.Ranks are determined by animals. Chameleon means ur stealthy and kill without being seen, pig means your sloppy and spray bullets everywhere. Foxhound is the ultimate rank, remember that.
