Somebody reverted this to Minoan Civilization-unless we are gonna start calling the Germany page, German Civilization-we might as well call this Minoa-since the Minoan Civilization was based in Minoa.
Andre is right, of course. Minoa is not the common name for the location of Minoan civilization (I'm not happy about Hitti either, and that's a culture I know a bit more about). What is the basis for calling it Minoa? If there is none, I will revert this back. Danny
Minoa is the common name of the Kingdom of Minoa. Minoan is heard when one refers to Minoan artifacts, Minoan technology, Minoan religion, or the like, but Minoa is the place.

I've started reading Toynbee's A Study of History, and he mentions the "Minoan Civilization" or "Minoan Society" as a progenitor of the "Hellenic Civilization". I can see the use of separating a Minoa article from a Minoan Civilization article. --Ed Poor 21:39 Nov 5, 2002 (UTC)
Actually, I just looked through the links. I am going to take the bold step of asserting that the name of a hotel or a town in upstate New York or a computer game or a new age novel do not constitute solid historical proof. The one site, www.educationplanet.com turned up a blank search for Minoa. Other sites referred to another island, Minoas, which is off the coast of Amorgos. So much for the Internet as a primary source. To the best of my memory (and its been several years since I studied this) Minoan civilization is named for the legendary King Minos. The excavations were at Knossos. Minoa, even if it exists as a term, is so little used. We should be describing a culture, not a place. If there is no real grounds for thsi to be Minoa, I will revert it. Danny
- I don't know enough of the subject to say if the page should be moved back (though I do know that "Minoan" returns four times as many hits on Google as "Minoa", so it seems more than reasonable). However, if you do make the move, can you make sure that all the redirects pointing here are changed so they point to this page's new location. I just changed them all to point here earlier today - when the page was moved, all the redirects were broken, because they became double redirects, which the software doesn't handle. --Camembert
And I thought it would be easy ... :-) Will do. Danny
WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU! MINOAN...MINOA....MINOAN....MINOA---DO YOU SEE WHAT THE N IS USED FOR? MINOAN IS AN ADJECTIVE! WHAT IS MINOAN? MINOA IS MINOAN!
I think what's wrong with me is that I have actually studied this and you have not. None of the websites you gave showed any indication that you are correct--unless, of course, we are citing computer games as proof of history. Staying in the Mediterranean littoral, are you planning on changing all the Etruscan articles to Ertusca next? Danny
In any case Minoan is an adjective from Minos, not from Minoa. Minos is Minoan by definition but he lived on the island of Crete so he is also Cretan. There are several places in the article which use the adjective Minoan when the adjective Cretan should be used instead, particularly for pre-Minoan times. -- Derek Ross
Minoa is clearly a back-formation from Minoan, and I don't think anyone in the field uses it. A reference to a book might help; all the books I have seen refer to the land of the Minoans as Crete. Meanwhile, I'm reverting it. --Josh Grosse
Just checked with the senior archeologist, where I work. No one uses Minoa. As Derek pointed out, Minoan comes from Minos, not Minoa. Danny
If nobody uses Minoa why is there a list of Minoa links above there? Your senior archeologist is clearly mistaken. Now, if you'd like to call the kingdom Minos, that will be acceptable. Minoa is more commonly used to indiciate , "Kingdom of Minos" but Minoan is an adjective or a person from Minoa/Minos-not the name of a place. Minoan civilization is not in line with the other national/historical page names and simply avoids the question of, "What is the name of the kingdom" I will gladly accept Minos but Minoa, Crete could be used as well but of course that causes confusion between modern Crete and ancient Crete so thus Minoa does seem more appropriate.
