Repeatedly adding nonsense to Burger King. -- Grunt (talk) 16:32, 2004 Aug 19 (UTC)

216.255.48.112 and 216.255.48.36

User is putting "I'M EVIL!!!" in huge red letters on Template:In the news, which appears on the Main Page. Every time it's reverted he does a re-revert and insists on knowing why that's vandalism. WTF? I thought that the templates that go to the Main Page would be protected for this very reason. - Eisnel

66.2.146.92

User appears to be createing lots of redirects from topics such as Dumb Bitch, Stupid Bitch etc. to Arianna Huffington

150.29.217.232

The User:150.29.217.232 is adding a link to his website to all articles related to Neural Networks or Machine Learning. In some places the link is mildly relevant, but in most it's just spam.

Blanked 256-bit era, repeatedly vandalized Rich Kyanka. --Slowking Man 05:47, Aug 19, 2004 (UTC)

66.185.84.80

User has been tagged for vandalism multiple times. Latest vandalism: blanking The Benefits of Cutting Corporate Taxes (which s/he created) and the corresponding VfD page. Has been warned multiple times, both on user page and on user talk page. User talk page claims "Just for general knowledge, the IP 66.185.84.80 is a shared Canadian IP", but the sheer number of vandalisms from that IP is getting out of hand. Likely related to vandalisms by 66.185.84.*; 66.185.84.208 currently appears twice on the main ViP page. • Benc • 04:17, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)

213.37.56.225 (not a vandal)

Not really sure what this user is doing, but it involves massive changes to transwiki links. Repeatedly asked, refused to respond. Is either a bot or somebody going on into multiple pages without a concern as to what he/she is doing. If this person would stop for a moment and explain what they're doing, and especially if they created a login, then they might not be considered a vandal, but without a response, I had to block them. RickK 23:35, Aug 18, 2004 (UTC)

This person was not adding interwiki links by comparing them to those at using the pywikipediabot. It was not a vandal, and they had an entire minute between edits. Guanaco 00:27, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)
One wonders if you would have been so quick to unblock this address if someone other than I had blocked them. Whether they were or were not a vandal, they were an unregistered bot, and therfore block-worthy. RickK 04:11, Aug 19, 2004 (UTC)

He has been consistently adding to Hezbollah (as well as once to Hassan Nasrallah) some stuff on an unfounded theory regarding Hezbollah supposedly having total control over all of IDF elite units and intelligence. He doesn't discuss it, he just keeps reposting it. The style and contents of his writing is reminiscent of another vandal who was writing from IP addresses 216.109.1.*, who I believe was banned just before this IP started to post on this subject (see Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion/United_Nations_Partisan_Forces_in_Lebanon_(UNPFIL)). I would be happy to discuss this with him, as I'm pretty sure it's sheer fantasy, but I cannot force him to talk about it (at least I don't know of any way). Am I going to have to revert his changes every other day?

Advertising for photography studio from 66.108.83.179

This user, presumably Clay Enos or an acolyte, has created articles on Clay Enos and on Enos's business, Streetstudio. Beyond that, the user is spamming external links into many articles, and even spam paragraphs. The stub on Richard Avedon needs expansion but not by saying that he inspired Clay Enos. The anon has created stubs on some obscure photographers that we didn't have before (Roger Fenton, William Shew) just to have more places to spam, so not all edits should be deleted. (Google suggests that Clay Enos is notable enough for that article to stay.) JamesMLane 10:29, 15 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Has been repeatedly inserting large POV content into Belcourt Castle. Doesn't understand the NPOV policy. Used to be an IP address, but recently got an account. supadawg 15:49, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

That's not vandalism, and simple reversion is not an appropriate way to deal with POV content. If you want to teach him NPOV, you need to tell him exactly what you think is objectionable in what he's adding. It would be good if he learned this before we get to the Kevin Koellisch/Tinney Ruth Tinney relationship ... Please don't bite the newbies. - Nunh-huh 15:58, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Not as much a vandal than a clueless newbie, this person as I write is posting unformatted substubs on individual episodes of "The Twilight Zone." They're more like brief plot synopses than anything encyclopedic. I've listed him on the "clueless newbies" page, but I'm concerned insofar as my attempts at contact have gone ignored which is why I've chosen to draw attention to the situation here. He's like a more advanced version of the B-Movie Bandit. - Lucky 6.9 03:36, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

  • Correction: I'm convinced this is a bot. Look at the times on the history. Some are coming in at a rate of one a minute and have been for several hours now. I'm putting them all up on VfD via the talk page since it would take me the better part of an hour to boilerplate them as speedy deletes and longer to add each one to the Vfd individually. Admins, it wouldn't break my heart to see these disappear before the end of the discussion period. - Lucky 6.9 05:42, 12 Aug 2004 (UTC)

I blocked this user for 24 hours for impersonation, since it was clearly designed to confuse (and possibly to discredit the genuine Hadal). I don't know what to do about the fact that they've copied the real Hadal's userpages -- do we delete, change to put in a note that they're impersonators, or what? Jwrosenzweig 22:51, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I think deletion and the impersonation note are two valid ways. Personally, I'd get rid of the entire account. Can you do that? Mike H 22:58, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC)
Nope -- only a developer (or possibly a steward) can do that. Normally in these cases we know who the impersonator is and we redirect the user page to that person's user page (and put a note there). But I have no idea who this is. I'm wondering if there's any consensus for one of my proposed options? I am hesitant to act too unilaterally -- I prefer consensus -- but I'd like to protect Wikipedians from this kind of identity theft. Hopefully we can get a few more people to chime in. :-) Jwrosenzweig 23:09, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Looks like it's already been deleted. Who did it? Mike H 23:12, Jul 29, 2004 (UTC)
Mike, I guess Maximus Rex either is less troubled by unilaterality (is that a word?) or knows the policies better than I do (which I find likely) -- he did it. :-) Thanks, Maximus -- I'll stop wringing my hands now. :-) Jwrosenzweig 23:16, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I can't find any policy that says we can, but there are numerous indefinite bans of impersonators made by a good spread of administrators. Infinite block + deletion of pages that support the fraud seems to be standard practice even if it's not written down anywhere. -- Cyrius| 00:05, 30 Jul 2004 (UTC)
It's not possible to delete an account although edits can be reassigned elsewhere. I've deleted pages like this before on the grounds they were vandalism and hence speedily deletable. I've blocked the user for 24 hours. I think his "contributions" (and as Wikipedia is not merely a collection of external links, I use the term very loosely) lose their legitimacy when he begins to replace existing links with his own, and refuses to communicate. If others disagree, they are free to reinstate the links. -- Hadal 04:16, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Looks like he is trying to get around the block by using the IP 192.85.50.2; sigh. Samboy 05:07, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Making multiple changes without edit summaries or comments on Talk, and switching to a new IP, are certainly bad features. On the other hand, when I found that his site included annotation of Byrne-Fischer that was taken verbatim from our article on The Game of the Century, without attribution, I left a comment in his site's guest book about it. He responded with this email: "Hey – thanks for the input. I am more than happy to do things the right way. Is this better? http://home.att.net/~bobbyfischer/game_of_the_century_chess.htm Chuck" It now refers to the FDL and links back to Wikipedia. So, for what it's worth, this was a sign of good faith. As for Hadal's point, many of these links enable the reader to see each move of a chess game without setting up a board, so they do add something that Wikipedia can't provide. Before this user came along, many of these articles had links to muljadi.org (for example, the link in Bobby Fischer to http://www.muljadi.org/Fischer.htm for Fischer's games), which is essentially the same thing, except that I can't get muljadi to work, perhaps because I haven't installed PGN. As far as I know, both sites are noncommercial. Anyway, I'll send our problem user another email and try to educate him about Wikiquette. JamesMLane 09:09, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Update -- he responded very quickly to my email, as follows: "Thanks for the feedback. I actually thought that the person removing my links was the guy at the muljadi site because I kept seeing his link stay and mine disappear – so I thought I would play by his rules; an obvious mistake. It wasn’t until I saw my IP blocked that I figured out it was the administrators undoing my changes. The second IP address I used was sort of a test to see how ‘on the ball’ you guys were and you passed with flying colors. I certainly don’t want to cause you guys any more grief - I think you have a great website and you won’t see any trouble out of me anymore." We currently have many articles that link to muljadi, so there's an open question of linking to online game repositories -- should we link to them at all, and if so, which one(s)? That's not an issue for this page, though (maybe Talk:Chess). JamesMLane 20:06, 28 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Hello - this is Chuck. I'm not sure if I am updating this right. I promise to be on my best behavior. The muljadi really doesn't work so I think my sites still have something to offer. If I could link some of the player's games to my site I could offer a link back to the biography site of Wikipedia on anyone I link to. I won't do anything without asking for permission.

Hi Chuck. We really appreciate your attempts to make Wikipedia better. However, Wikipedia is not the appropriate forum to advetise your sites nor is Wikipedia trying to be a gateway to other web sites. The idea is to include good content into the articles we have. Links are intended as reference, for example to a site being discussed or to well known sites that have original content such as well known news sites relative to the article (CNN, Slate, even Al-Jazeera where appropriate). We don't want to become a Yahoo launch point for other sites. To that end, users should not add links to their own web sites. If your site becomes well known it will makes its way to an article on its own and you won't have to add it. Otherwise we'd have links to everyone's sites (including my own) and we'd end up a yahoo directory listing. - Tεxτurε 04:50, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Understood - Chuck.

Tεxτurε, with most external links we try to incorporate any useful content in the Wikipedia article. These links are different, though. The sites (muljadi and Chuck's site) let the reader see each move of a chess game. We just can't do that in the articles. I have no connection with Chuck's site and I think the link is appropriate. The question applies to many different articles. I'll follow through on starting a thread on Talk:Chess on the subject. JamesMLane 05:42, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Sounds like a good approach. - Tεxτurε 13:14, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Way hard banned, for a year. I've blocked this IP for a week - it appears to have been used by someone else two weeks ago, so they probably do reassign DHCP addresses - and noted the attempt to edit on User:Paul Vogel. Ban timer resets automatically - David Gerard 21:40, 21 Jul 2004 (UTC)

20 July 2004

Has been attempting to link certain words in Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy! and Series finale as adwords to an external site. I personally find this one of the most offensive forms of vandalism, being completely against what Wikipedia is about. The IP has also made some valid edits over the same time frame, so maybe it is a user who really doesn't know any better? I have posted a warning to User talk:208.17.70.46, I really had to restrain myself though :-/ Chuq 23:12, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

I don't think it's intentional, the user probably has a trojan horse on his computer which does this automatically. RickK 23:20, Jul 20, 2004 (UTC)

That's worrying. If there's one trojan now, there will be many later. We should keep an eye out for this. All of these links were to search.targetwords.com -- The Anome 23:36, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)
It happened just the other day with another user, whose name I can't remember right now. He downloaded lavasoft and got rid of the problem. RickK 19:07, Jul 21, 2004 (UTC)
Isn't it possible to put a URL on some sort of banned list, so that if it is in an article, it won't save? I'm sure I remember someone saying this could be done - and if so, we could do this with targetwords.

Myriad AOL proxies targeting User:Blankfaze

Seems someone who really doesn't like Blankfaze has decided to embark on a crusade to reveal his version of the world (that Blankfaze and his defenders are sock puppets of either aplank or Guanaco). Mainly targeting user pages (Blank's, Meelar's, Danny's, myself's) and Main Page templates (especially Template:Did you know.

Curiously, this barrage commensed shortly after Danny blocked User:Anthony DiPierro for edit warring with Blankfaze on Template:Feature. I wonder if there's a connection? -- Hadal 14:04, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

There is insulting discussion going on at Blankfaze's talk page, and the proxy vandalized my user page (see edit history), saying that Blankfaze is my gay lover. For the record, I haven't had any lovers, be them gay or straight.
On another note, one of the proxies vandalized childlove movement and redirected it to Blankfaze's user page. Mike H 15:32, Jul 20, 2004 (UTC)

Aren't AOL proxies characteristic of Michael? Michael has been known to insert himself into controversies and commit vandalism while trying to create the impression that someone else is actually the culprit. See Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Lir and accompanying talk. As far as I can tell, there was at least a little delay before the vandalism, which makes more sense if it's not Anthony. Also, as stubborn as Anthony may be in an edit war, I haven't seen him escalate by resorting to personal abuse and vandalism on other pages, so this seems out of character for him. --Michael Snow 18:19, 20 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Based on the evidence from the vandalism on my page, this isn't Anthony or Michael, but rather Mr. Treason, the one who threatened to sue everyone and is now back...funnily enough, he's forgotten about lawsuits and just wants to throw in lots of homosexual slurs. Mike H 22:52, Jul 20, 2004 (UTC)

The example I gave to Mr. Wales to give him an idea of what we're up against was a fictitious listing for Ronald Reagan: "Ronald Reagan is an actor who stars in such films as Bedtime for Bonzo and The Killers." This IP address is always going back and changing information about Soka Gakkai International and related pages to remove references to Soka being considered controversial or a 'cult' by some. I feel like the article text does a good job of representing both sides of the argument (ie. being NPOV), but s/he seems to just be interest in whitewashing the whole situation. This has happened repeatedly over a long stretch of time, all from the same IP. Does the community agree that this is worthy of a ban by wikipedia standards? --Carl 08:55, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)

He or she did it again. The summary said, "Don't know what NPOV means. Corrected facts and removed editorializing," but in actuality, all they removed was the statement that some people believe that Soka Gakkai is a cult. Well, go to http://www.buddhajones.com/ and you'll see that it's true. Some people think it's a cult. Does everyone? No. Does wikipedia say it's a cult? No. Someone should really ban this user, since they only spout propaganda for Soka Gakkai, instead of helping with anything else.

It's for some inane cartoon called "Street Sharks" and was soon followed up with one titled "Jerome Hines." The total content: "Opera Singer. Bass." Please note that Slashdot has published a story on Wikipedia today, linking directly to Crushing by elephant and GNU/Linux_naming_controversy. The articles are being vandalised, presumably by Slashdotters - please keep an eye on them. -- ChrisO 09:58, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)

User is making death threats against me as well as engaging in simple vandalism. See Wikipedia talk:Requests for comment/User:68.36.175.254

User is also using the 205.188.116.* AOL proxy address block, seen in Neutrality's report below. -- Cyrius| 18:34, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Has vandalized my userpage. Neutrality 23:52, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC) "Contribs"

User:DPFJr / 209.247.222....

(I forgot to sign this. It was me: WMC) Not quite sure if this is the right place... DPFJr appears to be somewhat obsessive (creating Relative motion theory, a close copy A Theory of Everything, another Wave Structure of Matter Theory and probably more). I listed some on Vfd; he persisently removed the Vfd header. The he blanked my user page [26] once under his own name and repeatedly as 209.247.222.31, or ...28. I have tried to remonstrate on his talk page with no success.

(William M. Connolley 10:36, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)) Vandalism continues. Can I please ask for a temp-ban at least of the anon IP's he is using?

(William M. Connolley 12:00, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)) Continues. Also as 209.247.222.32 and 209.247.222.36.

This continued vandalism clearly oversteps the mark. I have put a 24-hour block on 209.247.222.0/24, which should put a stop to this for now. -- The Anome 12:36, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)
(William M. Connolley 15:41, 7 Jul 2004 (UTC)) He is now back again as 209.247.222.43, removing Vfd notices. Can you block again please?

This IP address is always going back and changing information about Soka Gakkai International and related pages to remove references to Soka being considered controversial or a 'cult' by some.

Nothing interesting here. Your garden variety vandal. Already reverted, just waiting for the block. Snowspinner 03:57, Jul 6, 2004 (UTC)

Don't block unless this user continues to vandalize. When Snowspinner made that comment, the anon had not been warned. Keep an eye on him. Guanaco 04:05, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Eek. My bad, sorry. Was excessively multitasking when I posted this one - shouldn't have asked for the block, and should have warned myself. :( Snowspinner 17:50, Jul 6, 2004 (UTC)
